LM complimenting SAK
on: February 23, 2010, 01:13:22 PM
I've heard that LM were originally designed to compliment SAK's.  Do any of you carry both?  Anyone have the Victorinox Pioneer Harvester?

I don't know if that was Leathermans intention but many members here do carry both. My usual combination is a Juice S2 and a Vic Camper.

I almost always have both on me, I'll sometimes be without a MT but never a SAK.  Most common pairing recently have been Squirt P4 and my own Huntsman Slim mod (3 layer Huntsman), or a Kick and a Champion if I feel like something a bit bigger.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Hmmm, not sure the design was to compliment a SAK, but the best combo for me is a Knifeless Fuse and a Safari Hunter.  No tool duplication and covers all bases.
I'm back!!

A Leatherman Freestyle CX, a Vic Rambler and a scout/camp knife is a favorite trio of mine.

they are both similar weights and size i think, also tools not far off, i would love a clip as the PST has opened my eyes to a true classic design, the pst fits so nice in my extra back pocket , im still waiting on the old pouch i won on ebay , ive got the kicks one but it moves around to much,  :-\ i hope this old one is a little more snug, then ill carry it in a pouch when im not carrying the Kick,

Tim Leatherman actually told us that if he never actually did intend a LM tool and SAK to be paired, that had always been his intention.

Sorry, I find this confusing. So, he did intend his multi-tool to be paired with a SAK from the beginning?

I paired a Skele' with a Wenger Ranger for a bit. I can't remember why I didn't like this team. There's very little duplication. I'll have to try it again and see what the problem was.

first post here :)

For may years I carried a Leatherman Wave, and a VIC Tinker. I have since lost the wave, replaced it, lost the tinker, and have yet to replace it. I have a VIC Bantam on the way as a pocket carry, but still miss my tinker. Planning on picking up either a tinker, or a super tinker someday soon. Also planning on picking up a leatherman skeletook so I will have many options. They work great together, they compliment each other very well.

In the UK I found a combination of the MINI and a SAK Ranger to be perfect for my needs.  Sometimes I wanted a serrated blade but it was never really a problem.  It was UK legal as well, which was a real bonus given the ridiculous current UK laws around knives.

For bigger Stuff I'd take the Spirit and a smaller SAK, or a Surge and a farmer.

Now I tend to pair up a Charge and a SAK ranger - lots of duplication but they are the only EDC multis I have out in NZ.

You okay boss?

And I used to carry both but now generally carry the SAK as a sheeple-friendly alternative to my usual multitool.
Got those frog legs.

I've been thinking about a good combination, I figured last night that a Juice C2, paired with a Super Tinker would be a great combination, you have the pliers / wire cutters, and a corkscrew in the Leatherman, than in the SAK you have a pair of scissors, a good Phillips, and a few other great tools.
There would be very little overlap and the combination of the 2 provides for a great set of tools.

Than I realized this morning. It leaves you without a solid locking blade. Something that a larger Leatherman like my Wave, or the Skeletool would offer. Ahhh choices lol.
If I was to stick with the above combination, I would either have to add a lock blade into the mix, perhaps my Leatherman c33x, add a Freestyle to the mix (not a bad idea honestly), or look at resorting the combination completely and stick with my Leatherman Wave, and add a Spartan.
