Not happy with selection of components
on: February 27, 2010, 12:44:03 AM
Just acquired a Power Pocket Plier and I want to customize it somewhat but I am unhappy with the SOG's component selection.  I want to do away with the knife blade since I already carry a knife so I have a file and saw blade installed.  This is where it gets tricky.  I like an awl and screwdriver but what is up with the redundancy?  Why didn't they make the can opener and bottle opener one thing?  Also, I have a 1/4" driver installed but it takes up a heck of a lot of room and I often say to myself that if could carry around 1/4" sockets I may as well carry around a dedicated driver??

Oh well...

Because the bottle opener + large flathead and the can opener + small flathead gives you four tools in two implements.

If you had a can opener + bottle opener you'd have to have two additional implements to get the same functionality of a large flathead and then a small flathead.

Leatherman has the can and bottle opener as one implement and they have a large flathead and small flathead as separate implements. Just one way to view the multi-tool math.

I think you should ditch the 1/4" driver.

The 1/4" drive is more used with adaptor and standard hex shank bit, rather than sockets.

Thanks for the replies.  This is what I'm getting at:

On one side I have: 3 Side File, 1/4 Driver, awl

Other side: Saw, Can Opener, Flat Screw Driver, Philips Driver

I could replace the 1/4 Driver with the bottle opener but my only other option for the next space is a spacer, robertson driver or another flat screw driver.

To add to the mix, I know how to open a bottle without a bottle opener so if I add the bottle opener I would have 5 flat head drivers (counting the file) and two methods of opening a bottle.

Thus, my concern that SOG has minimal options.

Also, with just a little work, the scissors will fit.

I was thinking of filing a philips to a thinner point and taking ANOTHER philips and blunting the tip so there is a #1 and #2 going on. hard to fit that in a powerplier cuz the head requires a small tool on each side. To me, 2 philips beats the large amount of flat drivers that riddle most MTs

Yes, that's what i think I need - another phillips.

Also, what kind of work would it take to get the scissorsa in there without losing the file and saw?

That would actually be very hard. I meant it takes a little work to get scissors in the PPP in general. My PPP (well really PT-510) has scissors, the bottle opener, Philips, wirestripper, large flathead, and file.
