How many layers does a Compact have?
« on: March 01, 2010, 09:32:37 PM »
Also, which model has that phillips screwdriver you can slide a piece of paper through?  Lastly, which 2 layer Victorinox has some weird scraper tool next to the big blade?  looks kinda of like a straight razor but with a wavy edge?
Thanks

Answers in order:

1. Compact has two layers
2. Lots. Any model with a phillips from c. 1974 to c. 1991. They were squared off until c. 1981, then round.
3. Need pics. Sounds like a pruning blade.

Not an electrician...at least not the pics I googled.  SAKwiki is not coming up for me...argh!!  The scraper thing i looks like  along blade when closed, but when you pull it out, it has this thing on the end, about 1/4-1/2" long that looks like a mini serrated edged cleaver....LOL.  sorry...camera is charging.

Not a pruning blade either.  blade part is only about 1/4/ to 1/2" tip of the tool that pulls out though full length is about 1 1/2" long.  camera is charging, sorry!

As for the philips, I thought only a few models had the split philips where you could slide a piece of paper between the tip?  Thought I saw a thread recently where somebody got one and posted pics of his phillips head picking up a piece of paper?

It's not a model thing, it's a time period thing. ALL backspring phillips from Victorinox has the split phillips head from 1974 until 1991. I have Champions, Hikers, SuperTinkers, Saleman, Tinkers, Fishermen, Craftsmen and Master Craftsmen all with the split phillips.

One day you're going to learn to trust me on these things

Huh. That's pretty cool. Anyone know why they made 'em this way? I can't see any real reason to have it designed like that.

That's an old style can opener on those Wengers.

What you should be doing is open up the "Tools" link on the SAKWicki,http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Tool+List

There are 2 tool description tables right there for both Manufacturers although they do not include everything.

Also click on the "Knife Blades" link http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Knife+Blade
to see different photos of various blades of the Victorinox side. The Wenger side has no photos at all.

Another thing is to click on the various Tool Image Galeries from the "Tools" link. There are different galleries for each different size and manufacturer of knife.

It's called the "can-key". It was designed to open tin canned food like SPAM.

No worries. Looks like a Tinker or Tinker Small from 82-85 (if the awl is solid) or 86-90 (if the awl has a hole in it).

It is a "can key"  I remember ( shows how old I am) that some food can came with a little key attached to the bottom.

Pulled the key off slip it into the little metal tap and twist off the seal letting you open the can.

I will try to find a pic. somewhere.

That's actually really cool. Obviously next to useless these days, last time I saw a can like that I was like 12, but very cool. Gotta love some of the stuff Vic comes up with.

How much did having that split in there weaken the driver though? Seems like I could see that being able to twist/bend at the end pretty easy if you torqued on it too hard.

Hey, we still get cans like that, and I can personally attest to the fact the 'can key' works very well. :D

Yeah but see, Americans are fat lazy smurfs and we can't stand for our cans of fake preservative laden food taking time and effort to open lol.
