Uh oh, one more store down
on: March 03, 2010, 03:22:14 AM
My most frequent u.s. store, edcdepot just succumbed to vic's MAP policy, almost every model had price jump of 50%.

With this going rate, soon there won't be any store with decent price left, it's no longer the high value it once was, and it's time for me to be done with this brand.  :(

I'm with you.

Benchmade has a similar set-up and I'm still undecided if it's worth the time to email around to find the best price or just buy a different brand.

Thanks, although I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before they get everybody.

Amazon sellers seem to be ignoring the MAP. I don't think these dealers  really care if they are an authorized dealers as long as they can get product. The MAP only hurts stores like FelineVet. Maybe a petition to Victorinox would help but I doubt it. I think they're trying to position themselves as a high end brand.

Luckily I'm not much of a collector. I have a handful of models I like, and I own most of them already. It just really sucks that Vic has to artificially inflate the market. They should do what most other companies do. Charge a wholesale price that allows them to make their profit margins and let the wholesale market take care of itself. Seems to me that would be in their best intrest, as it means higher product turn around. I can't see their MAP being indusive to higher sales when they already have their set price. Retailers who are willing to take a hit for selling at a lower profit margin make up for it in volume, which only HELPS Victorinox's sales.
Or at least that's how I remember it form economics way back in the day...

I  believe that Victorinox (and/or Swiss Brands USA) have done their homework, and they believe that it is important for their business model to help B&M stores to carry their product. The unfortunate effect of the rise of online shopping is that it kills the B&M business. Many people I spoke to were proud of themselves for checking out and comparing items (TVs, audio systems, SAKs...) in the store and then buying them online from a competitor at a lower price. Without taking this further (and risking a political debate), all I am going to say is that I will continue to buy, use, and collect Victorinox products, even if I have to pay MSRP (not MAP) for them.

It really is a shame to see a reputable company like Victorinox operating a price fixing scam like this.  I don't care about B&M stores, it is a dead business model and just trying to "save" them like this prolongs the inevitable and hurts them in the long term.

I don't care if they charge more. All I want is the Vic life time garantee and the swiss quality on all products.
just that explain alot to me.
