A Few Kind Words On Low Lummen Lights
on: March 09, 2010, 10:46:07 PM
I have one 5 lumen light I reach for most of all. Its great for navigating a dark house at night to use the privy without disturbing anyone. It works great on setting a tripped breaker back on without having 100 lumens bounce back in your eyes blinding you. Also it is good for close up work without knocking your eyes out. It seems a lot of people like the high lumen lights & that is ok by me. IMHO the low lumen lights serve very well indeed in some situations.

I get a lot of use out of my low lumen lights too.  I find 20-30 lumens to be the most versatile for single-level lights, but 1-5 lumens has its purpose with dark-adjusted eyes.

I really like the low lumen lights. The tiny Photon Freedom is a favorite. Ramps down to easily less than 2 lumens , if needed. Navigating theatres, reading in the automobile(without disturbing the driver), and keeping a watch on my sick childrens temperature without waking them are just a few of the uses I have found for low lumens.

My Pak-Lite is great for low-light situations.  It sits next to the dog leashes, and often follows me out the door for other purposes as well.  When more dollars fall into my pocket, I have plans for a second one to keep in the truck.

I have brighter lights, but (forgive the blasphemy)- but sometimes it is possible to have too much light.    ;)

I prefer my edc lights to have multiple settings because not all situations call for police spotlights.  I've got a few low lumen lights for, as space cowboy said, navigating a dark house without blasting the sleepers with sunshine.  Since there's not too much for the light to reflect off of outside, higher power lights are necessary.

I only wish that the Fenix L0D came on at Low-Med-High rather than the Med-Low-High it works at.  As folks say sometimes you just don't want a room full of light and having to cover the torch while you cycle to low is a bit of a pain. :-\

I agree, but you'll see just as many folks argue for med-low-high.

You need a Quark MiNi AA.  :pok:

I much prefer the medium first.  Almost never use the low.             Love my Quark Mini AA. Wish it was medium first

That's what I love about the iTP A2 EOS.  It's mode order is Low-Med-High.

I agree. Which is why I love my edc flashlight's low-mid-high settings and memory mode. I must confess I like to have the highest setting always available, but I find myself using the lowest very often, especially when it's night and I need my eyes to adjust to darkness.

I agree, it's not always about bright light. Mostly it is but not always :D

I use my Maglite Solitaire if I'm going out really early in the morning and need to find something in the bedroom. Works a treat  :tu:

If you ever wish you could have a light nearly as small as an LOD, but ran nearly 3 times as long on a cell, the Q-MiNi AA is for you.  I just can't do AAA anymore (except for an ARC-P or E01 for neck carry).
