Pounamu Waiters
on: March 22, 2010, 05:06:42 AM
Some of you might have noticed the random photo threads of mine that are starting to appear.  I've been on a road trip around New Zealand for two weeks and had an awesome time.  Found lots of amazing places on my way and picked up a few interesting bits and pieces.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon a stall where a woman hand carved Pounamu stuff - this is of great cultural importance to the Maori and good carvers are hard to find.  In her hand-made collection I found these beauties - two pounamu scaled 84mm waiters... so I bought them both (and an intricate Hei-Tiki for a small fortune :D).

The pounamu makes them look excellent IMO.  I'm considering selling one of them here on MT.O, but don't know if I can bear to lose one of them :D

The Pics!

That is stunning  what is the weight like?
Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day,
listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time

Those are indeed quite stunning!  I love green and those are sensational.

Did you ask how they came about deciding to carve scales for SAKs?

Apparently she started doing it when she made a gift for a friend who collected SAKs.  He liked it so much she made some more.  I'm hoping to visit her stall again in the future to see if she has made any more.  Its 500 Km away though...  :D.  Her main work is Maori pendants though - some of them were stunning!

PM on the way sometime soon Mr Bee!
