A Squirt and a Half... Or Is It Half a Squirt?

And no, its not what you guys are thinkng... :rofl:

A friend came by and asked for my help to do something about his PS4 (No... not the game station by Sony)... It’s that popular keychain sized MT from Leatherman)...

After inspection, it had a broken plier head and file (pretty much all the file was missing, except for the tang). It definitely seen some hard times...

Took it apart and salvaged all the usable pieces. My friend had also brought along some pivot barrels and torx screws.

Before I can assemble all if what’s left, I had to ensure the pivot barrel fits. No problems for the scales, spacer and keyring attachement. The handle chassis and tools had 3mm hole diameter and needed to be enlarged to 1/8”.

Would have thought that Leatherman would be consistent with their measurements.

Anyways, here’s the end result...



And here it is with the leftover parts I get to keep...



Oh, I had to do some filing on the pivot end of the bottle opener and screw driver so that it wont be a nail biter to open...

Makes me ponder too... Why would LM have peened pivots on the Squirt and Juice lines while the rest of their offerings are all screws?... No answer needed... Just my silly mind overthinking :lol:

Overall I like the squirt’s blade profile... just don’t like the chisel grind... Nothing that my Lansky can’t fix... :lol:

Actually the earlier production of the squirt series came out with pivots/screws, but changed them to rivets "to provide a better product" to the customers.

Aloha, the rivets are surprisingly easy to drill... It may just be me, but it feels softer than brass rivets on SAKs...

I just hope these stainless steel pivots will hold up... did put some loctite...

Thats good to hear.  I've never seen a torx Squirt in person.  My Squirts are all riveted.  I do like the tool set on them so "needing" torx is not necessary but it would be nice.

My guess is that you can build / assemble with pivots by hand for a proof of concept run, then when you know you are onto a winner you can invest in machinery / tooling to use rods, which in long run may be cheaper.

I modded a squirt and my 1/8" diameter half-inch long pivots fitted fine.  In the end I used some other slightly smaller diameter flat head pivots from a cheap MT, to keep the profile thinner.
