Paladin Tools
on: March 31, 2010, 02:44:49 AM
I am over the moon in finally getting these tools. I found out about them after I joined these forums, and wanted them. The time never seemed right to get them until now. I got these from TigerDirect.ca, the only online retailer that I could find that would ship them to Canada.  The reason why I wanted these so badly at the time were two fold. They were made by SOG, which at the time of discovery, I didn’t have in my collection. Secondly, they were geared towards IT and Electrical market segments. In other words, they had a neat niche that not many tools specialize towards…particularly on the IT front.

I am going to start with the smallest and work our way up to the largest tool.

Paladin Power-Play PT 510
The PT 510 is based on a SOG Pocket PowerPlier. It outwardly looks like the PowerPlier except for the handle markings. Those markings hint at the specialization of this tool that differentiates it from the SOG PowerPlier The sheath is even based on the sheath for the PowerPlier design wise, differing only in the stamping on the product.

This photo of the front insert in the packaging states that the PT 510 has 18 functions.

SOG makes very nice quality tools. The Paladin is no exception.

This photo shows the back of the packaging listing the tool’s functions.

The PT 510 fanned out.

Paladin Power- Play PT 525
Next up the food chain, is the much larger PT 525. This tool outwardly looks like a SOG PowerLock, but with different markings and tools.

The front of the package is tastefully done. Note that the Pt 525 has 6 more functions than the PT 510.

The sheath is a bit odd, in that there is a place to put a few  ¼ drive adaptors.  These are accessible via an opening on either side of the sheath towards the bottom. This forms a tube that crosses from side to side. Weird. It looks like a SOG sheath otherwise.

Here, you can see the driver adapter nestled in its storage home. Getting it out is easy once you remove the tool from the sheath, It involves sticking a finger down there and pushing outwards on the um..er…sock. Be sure to have a hand ready to catch the adaptor as it exits. Not sure how handy this is once you are wearing the sheath.

Here is the back of the packaging listing all the functions.

The PT 525 fanned out.

Paladin Power-Play PT 540
Moving to the top of the food chain, is the massive PT 540. I do not think it is based on anything that SOG currently offers. I could be wrong on that, as my SOG knowledge is rather limited. All I can say is that it larger than the PT 525. Incidentally, they both share the same sheath.

As you can see by the packaging, the functions jump to 30.

Here is the back of the packaging.

If you open the packaging insert, you will find a nice diagram with a nice listing of all the functions.

The PT 540 fanned out.

Now you may wonder about the size differences. Well let us take a short tour of these 3 tools.

Here, you see the size differences between the 3 Paladin tools. The PT 510 is on the left, the PT 525 in the middle, and the PT 540 on the right.

Rotate90 degrees, we now can see their edge. Note the nut drive on the PT 540’s handle.

Looks like I messed up on the PT 540’s orientation. Anyways, the front of all these tools have Paladin markings. The back side have ruler markings.

Showing the other side, except for the PT540,which shows the same nut driver. In reality, the other handle has a different size nut driver. Oh well, you get the idea.

Another size comparison shot.

Note that the pliers get more feature rich and complex with each successive model.

Well that concludes this little photo romp through the Paladin lineup. I am impressed with each in the series. Mind you, I do like SOG tools in general, and these definitely do not disappoint.

I never saw this before, but the pt 540 looks like it'd pinch the hand pretty good

Nice post Chako, I've been thinking for quite a while that I would end up getting the PT-540.  After reading your post I'm more inclined to get the PT-525.

All three are great additions to your collection.

I reckon the PT-540 should come with a warning , user must wear steel cap boots when using this tool, drop that thing on your foot  :o :o
As for only 30functions  ???
31.Extended Drywall Punch(take 2 steps back & throw PT-540 at wall requiring removal)
32.Instant man hole maker(drop PT-540 whilst in roof space)

I wonder how popular these MT's are with telco/IT people

Thanks everyone.

AHB, because it has come to my attention that some perceive me as a braggart on this forum, which I most certainly am not. So I am going to be gun shy with information like that, including what items I am expecting to acquire in the future.  :salute:

MultiMat, no clue. I do know that the IT folks who work at my School Board definitely do not use them. As for the palm pinch of the 540, can’t say it is bad for that. I think the size of the MT sort of helps in that regard.

Much appreciated :tu:

540 is cool, but they want over $120 on ebay for it, have no idea where else you could find one, but that is simply too much.

I think they pack such a high price is cuz there's a scrapyard's worth of steel in it and It has to be made by paladin themselves.  The 525 and 510 are both using sogs stock models and just vamping them up.  The pt 540 is an entirely new design and costs much money to produce :-\

I think it's interesting that the 540 has recesses in the handles for the tool covers to sit in, I always felt that the powerlock covers where an afterthought and the tool had much better form factor with them removed.  Mine sits kinda funny when closed if they are on.

Great to see that Paladin are actually moving the design forward I hope SOG have taken note
