Thoughts on Victorinox size and ease of use.
on: April 01, 2010, 01:15:11 AM
I was skimming Amazon today, and I usually read a lot of reviews to keep my finger off the "order" button.  I came across a review of the Huntsman II, with the bumpy scales.  I was actually checking to see if anyone had any thoughts on the second rate scales on these knives, but none were apparent.  One reviewer, T. Swanson, plainly stated he thought the Huntsman was way too small and should be called a "Huntscout" because it was better suited to little boys and small men.  I was a little caught off guard by that, because as far as slipjoints go, the 91 mm Vics are normal sized.

Thoughts anyone?

Compared to some of the knives available, even a Marine's Ka-Bar is quite small.

now, a 91mm Vic might not be as useful as a salmon for cutting lumber, for it's just right for damn near everything else.

I actually carry 84mm Vics mostly, and have nae a worry in the world.

This guy might be confusing a knife with his todger for how long it ought be.

That is exactly what I thought!

For what they are made for, Vics are unparalleled.  I like the 84 mm knives better for pocket carry as well.  I don't know what this guy thinks a pocket knife should look like, but the Huntsman is a darn good knife any way you look at it!

I find the size to be just about perfect for general utility work .

That's what I thought.  Just really odd to hear that sort of review from anyone.  I guess you can't please everyone.

I've always found the 91mm to fit into my hand really well.  This guy could just be a really big chap - I should imagine with really big hands a 91mm might seem a little small to get a good grip.

I know a 7' guy here in New Zealand whose hands would make a Surge look puny.

Nothing wrong with the 91mm as a pocket knife IMO.  I'd even say that at 4 layers the Huntsman is a good hand-full, nice and comfortable for prolonged use (that's going to depend on the size of your hands though).  For prolonged cutting 1-2 layers are a little slim for me, 3-4 feels good, 5+ a bit to big, YMMV though.

As to the Nylon scales found on the Huntsman II, some folks like them some don't.  There's no doubt that they are more scratch resistant than the Cellidor, they'll stay new looking longer.  Some people think that they are more grippy due to the textured surface, I in fact find them more slippery.  I put this down to me having quite dry, hard hands (I really need to moisturise more  ;)).  I also think the heat stamped shield looks cheap compared to the inlay one, but that's just a matter of taste.  Really there's nothing wrong with them, and you should try them for yourself, but they'd never be my choice.  Do remember that if you do get the Huntsman II you can always swap the scales for Cellidor if you really don't like the Nylon.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I don't think I will be buying a huntsman any time too soon, but that could change.  I am really trying to perfect my peening technique for modding so I can build the knife I want.  I have figured out that building a SAK from parts is really hard.  Hell, the mod I am going for is really close to a huntsman, maybe I should just go for it.
