my niece is stuck at a trade fair in Milan (Italy) as her flight to Santander (Spain) for tomorrow is canceled :(

It appears to be getting worse before getting better; hopefully your niece will be one of lucky ones  :tu:

At least she has no water to cross; would the 13 hour car journey be an option? Or the train?

yeah, she'll find a way, they've now announced all airports in the north of Spain are also closed now as well, looks like it's getting worse and worse :(

my ex hockey captain who i still talk too in on a business trip to china, he took the second week as leave so he could have a holiday there as he has friends there, i bet he s not too concerned about being stuck there for now, he lived there for 2 years once. I havent spoken to him yet though.

UK Airport Disruptions Update - 20th April - 0900 GMT
Update Europe at 0900GMT on Tuesday, 20th April 2010.


AIR:
British Airways is aiming to resume some flights from London airports from 7pm on Tuesday.
Longhaul departures departing after 4pm and shorthaul after 7pm would operate.
BMI plans to resume UK domestic flights from London Heathrow at 7pm, and from UK domestic airports from 1pm on Tuesday.
Virgin aims to run some services when UK airspace reopens and is asking passengers to check their website before travelling to the airport.
Aer Lingus has confirmed that all flights from Dublin, Cork and Belfast to Spain, Portugal and Italy with a scheduled departure time up to 1pm will operate as scheduled on Tuesday.
Ryanair has grounded services to and from northern Europe until 1pm on Wednesday.
Airport operator BAA has asked passengers not to travel to its airports until further notice and to keep in touch with their carriers.
Eurocontrol has said European air traffic set to return to normal on Thursday.


RAIL:
Eurostar, the high-speed passenger train service that links the UK and mainland Europe, will be running an extra 28 trains to help stranded passengers.
The rail company announced that between Tuesday 20 and Sunday 25 April all 30,000 of the available standard class seats on its trains will be on offer at a special price of £89 one-way.
Passengers have been urged to book online rather than turn up at rail stations.


FERRY:
Ferry companies have also boosted their schedules, listed below is the latest info from around the UK.
DFDS - brought forward the completion of dry docking for Esbjerg-Harwich so extra r/t on 20 April from Esbjerg and then from Harwich on 21 April ? 620 passengers.
Newcastle to Amsterdam fully booked until Thursday, good availability Saturday onwards. Amsterdam to Newcastle is full until Saturday. Good availability Sunday onwards.
P&O Ferries - have availability on the Dover-Calais route in both directions, foot passengers are advised to turn up at the port when they?ll be accommodated on the next available crossing, passengers with vehicles are advised to pre-book.
LD Lines - have generally seen an increase of over 400% in traffic carryings compared to what was originally booked. They are seeing unprecedented demand for this time of year. Foot passenger space available on Portsmouth-Le Havre and Newhaven-Dieppe. In addition, tourist space on all ferry services - Dover-Boulogne/ Ramsgate-Ostend/Newhaven-Dieppe/Portsmouth-Le Havre
Norfolkline - Next available space out of Belfast or Dublin to Birkenhead is tomorrow, there is limited space from Birkenhead to Belfast or Dublin tonight.
Brittany Ferries - very limited space on their Spanish routes this week, but plenty of foot passenger space, and limited vehicle space, on their routes from Caen, Cherbourg and St Malo into Portsmouth, and from Roscoff into Plymouth
Stena Line - Additional capacity has been added in the form of increasing passengers from 550 to 650 on day sailings and by doubling up all freight drivers on overnight sailings to free up cabin capacity for passengers.
Availability for the coming days is very limited and really it is only from Thursday there is any real space to offer.
Norfolkline - Dover-Dunkirk services have limited availability for passengers with cars, Norfolkine can?t carry foot passengers on its French route. They are offering limited availability of seats onboard coaches.
Irish Ferries - Space available on both their UK routes; Holyhead-Dublin, Pembroke-Rosslare.
The HM Maritime and Coastguard Agency have granted exemptions to all ferries travelling from Dover to Calais to carry an extra 10% of passengers.
A spokeswoman for the P&O ferry company said: "At Dover, we do 32 round-trips a day and we have pulled in staff to increase passenger capacity, but we have no extra ships."

COACH:
Eurolines, the European coach arm of National Express has announced it will be providing an additional 4000 seats for routes to and from key European cities today and tomorrow.
National Express UK services are also extremely busy to Scotland and to the ports including Dover, Portsmouth and Southampton.

I'm glad my job doesn't require me to fly. I'm a security guard and stay grounded. Glad you made it home and hope everyone else does soon also.

Makes me sound like a jet setter lol :D

Nothing too exciting I'm afraid  :-[ I live in N. Ireland but my company's head office and rest of my team are based on the mainland UK. Our team meetings are always over there, so on the plane I go  ::)

Just happens I had a team meeting and training last week and have a national conference next week. I only fly over about once every six weeks.

Good thing flights are back I suppose, my climbing buddy is going to Norway right quick.
