A trio of tools.
on: April 21, 2010, 12:33:11 AM
Got a few more items in today. One of them I am shocked...nay...positively smacked at its beauty, form, and function. I am getting a little ahead of myself however.

First up is a Gerber Resolve. The Resolve is part of that Suspension family. Has the same tool load out, tool locks, general handle shape, etc. I will add though that each tool of this series, although very similar, do feel different in the hands.  This one has a very nice weight, and the sleek handles give it a very nice stowed away feeling. Once opened, I find the handles play out a little more than the others in the series. This makes using the pliers a bit of a reach for me.

Next up is a Victorinox BO Spirit S. I like this a lot. My biggest complaint with the stainless steel Victorinox MTs are the shiny polished handles that make holding them a pain if your hands get a little wet. The BO versions do not seem to have this issue.

Last but not least, is a tool that I have read about in here but I never paid any attention to until now. Boy was I wrong.  I like to fiddle with new tools, and this one takes the cake. I marveled at just how perfect it seems. You can tell a lot of thought and foresight went into designing and making this tool. It also oozes quality.  I can honestly say this has got to me one of my favorite tool designs out there to date. How could I be so blind all this time?

The tool? A Spyderco Spyderwrench.

You can use both sides together, or apart.

One half is part large blade and screwdriver. The other half is an adjustable wrench, and driver bits storage along with a nice removable diamond file/Phillips driver/pin. The pin acts as a tool lock when both halves are together.

You can lock both parts together for maximum torque when using the bit driver. A simple press of the locking mechanism and you are unlocked. Very elegant.

The knife Is made from AUS 8 steel, and is a lock back design.

A little Leatherman information.

Good catch ! The Spyderco Multi is one i never will warm up to , tho i like their folders . That said , it certainly has a place in the hands of a dedicated collector .

As cool as that thing looks, I just don't think I would ever carry it in place of a Leatherman.

I like it for its ingenuity, form and function. It is a neat tool. That and it is utterly unique. :D

I might have to ferret out a Spyderco Byrdwrench next.

Bob will come along and tell me there are a dozen different variations.

Don't forget the US-made Spyderwrench, too.  ;)

The Spyderwrench is very cool, but I can't see myself ever carrying/using it much which makes the price REALLY hard to swallow. For collection purposes DEFINITELY a must-have, but I'd rather spend my limited-to-non-existent funds on things I'll actually use.

  • Why is it doing that?

Yeah, the Spyderwrench definetely gets both of my thumbs (and toes, if barefooted :P) up in the novelty department. I used to have one of the early 440C/USA-made models, purchased directly from their designer (back when Spyderco had first announced them only to discontinue them shortly thereafter). I EDC'ed it for a couple of weeks (or at least tried to), but the lack of wire cutters, needlenose pliers, and the ease with which the slip joint stuck, delegated the tool to drawer guard duty... ::) This is not to say the tool is lacking or anything; just that it didn't fit in very well with my day-to-day needs. I'd suggest this tool to anyone who needs a _wrench_ and sizable blade (btw among the tools I've had, the Spydie's blade was second only to the X-Tract's, although using it detached from the wrench part was a tad uncomfortable) but anyone with a need for _pliers_ should (imo) steer clear... :-\
