Centurion versus Adventurer
on: July 31, 2007, 01:02:00 PM
Could one of the resident SAK experts please explain the difference between these two Vics?

Looking at their pics and feature lists, they seem nearly identical to me.

The Centurion is a black Adventurer.

Other than that, they are the same model.  Victorinox names are an interesting proposition, mostly because it's left to the reps in each country to name the knives.  Names that sound cool in one language or region, aren't so great in others so many models have numerous names, (Waiter/Bartender, Plumber/Lumberjack), many names have numerous models (Yeoman, Golfer) and many knives simply don't have names.  Then, there's the confusion on how names are set up, like the Huntsman, the Fieldmaster and the BSA Huntsman, which is a Fieldmaster, only with Boy Scout scales.

If you look at the model number for the Adventurer (0.8953) you will see that the Centurion has almost the same model number (0.8953.3) but with an extra digit, which denotes black scales.

Make sense yet?  :P

I thought the centurion had a linerlock versus the adventurer which was a sidelock.

That is entirely possible.  The only Centurion I have is earlier than '03 which is when Victorinox introduced the liner lock.

Can anyone confirm this?

Which of the two lock systems do SAK experts prefer?

I've never had a Vic with either type of lock, but have heard complaints about the Vic linerlock being awkward to unlock.  Is the sidelock easier to use?

The main differences between the two models are:

The Centurion has a linerlock which also blocks the screwdriver/bottleopener, the  Adventurer
has a sidelock.
The screwdriver/bottleopener on the Centurion is larger.
The awl on the Centurion has no hole.
Regarding the numbers, Centurion and Adventurer don't have the same model number.
The number of the Centurion is 0.8453.3, the number of the Adventurer is 0.8953.
The number on models with sidelocks starts with 0.88 , 0.89 or 0.90, the number of the
linerlock models starts with 0.83 or 0.84.

Thanks a lot, Anson Argyris!

That is a very precise answer to my question.

You must be a real SAK expert to have that kind detailed info available.

Thank you, but I'm not an expert at all.  ::)
I own some SAKs, and I looked into the catalog on the Victorinox website.

Expert or not, you dug up the info requested.

I have a hard time finding and comparing different models on most manufacturers websites.  Most websites are so poorly done as to make it difficult, if not impossible.  The Gerber website springs to mind, but there are plenty of others that are less than helpful.

So, I wouldn't try looking at the official Vic site except as a last resort.  Easier just to ask the experts here.

Thanks again.

www.SAKWiki.com is a pretty good resource for SAK info, and it's getting better all the time.  As for other manufacturers, well that's what Multitool.org is for!

Thanks for the pointer, Def.

I'd happened across that site before, but had forgotten about it.

It's filling in slowly but surely, and if you have anything to add, by all means do it!

Yeah, it seems the liner locks are backwards, for the "lefties". I imagine "righties" need only some time to get used to it.

I translated Gusmanovich's post to English for everyone's benefit.  :hatsoff: What he said was,

"Both Centurion and Adventurer have been updated after 2017
Both received a new lock, removed the hole in the awl, etc.
Serial numbers were 0.8953.3 and 0.8953. After update 9 replaced 4. These are absolutely identical knives, only the color is different. And you point out the differences between knives of different years of release."
