Camillus knives is one of the oldest knife companies in United States and has been around since 1876. They unfortunately filed for bankruptcy is 2007 and was purchased by Acme United. They no longer make their knives domestically with the exception of a few fixed blades. Since the Acme relaunch of the brand, they have produced quite an array of mostly budget offerings. That's not a bad thing as long as materials and quality are decent.
One of those budget offerings that we are looking at today is the Inject Folding Knife. The Inject caught my eye because it includes two pocket sized tools included in the handle. The company does have a full sized multitool available but it's simply a rebrand from another manufacturer and not unique to Camillus.
The Inject features a 4.5 inch glass filled nylon handle coupled with a 3.5 inch blade of 420 stainless. Being a budget offering your not going to see any alpha-numeric steels here. The blade proudly states " titanium" on it due to the fact that Camillus bonds titanium to their blades to increase corrosion resistance. I've read up on how that's done and it's an interesting read. The blade is really sharp out of the box and I haven't seen where the bonding has any effect on performance. The knife rides smoothly on nylon washers and came centered pretty decently. I'm able to snap open the blade with just a thumb flick and no wrist action is needed.
When it comes to the handles, the GFN handles have a nice texture to them and keep hands from slipping even when wet. The handles have full liners that are not skeletonized; this might be because of the tools but adds some nice heft to the knife.
The tools are held between the GFN handles and the liner by some kind of rention pin. To release a tool you push forward on one of the blue tabs and the tool comes popping out quite quickly. To store the tool once again you simply insert the tool and the lock will grab the tool and lock it into position. You do need to pay attention which way the tool is oriented or the tool will not lock. Thankfully the GFN handles have a molded imprint of the tools on the outside of the handles for identification purposes.
The two tools that comes with the Inject have a few functions to them. One tool has a screwdriver, two very small wrenches and what looks to me like bicycle spoke wrenches. The other tool has a pry end, several ridiculously small hex holes, a bottle opener and a rescue style cutter. I've tried desperately to find ways to use them, but due to their size I haven't found them useful. The screwdriver does work on a flat but phillips is iffy; not sure how a twisting motion would work on the steel if it's not heat treated well. The wenches are so strange in size that I tried a few small bolts and didn't run into one that fit. The cutter does indeed work and cuts fishing line well and a few other small things. I've tried to find info on the size of the cutouts to help aid my task but hadn't been able to find one.
Rounding out the package is a nice deep pocket carry clip. I'm a sucker for a good pocket clip and can't stand knives that stick up an inch or more from your pocket. I feel I keep them in my pocket better and I have less likelihood of it getting snagged and yanked out of pocket. The deep carry clip on the Inject is pretty low profile and doesn't flare out excessively.
The Inject is a neat little knife for under $20 and ticks some boxes if your looking for a funky budget knife. I wish Camillus would have asked for feedback during development to help make this knife amazing. Maybe put a full wrench on one side similar to a Pocket wrench (albeit smaller) and on the other tool a pry/philips combo tool. I would love to see an improved Inject that solves these issues with maybe an upgraded blade steel.
