I agree on awls.  They're underappreciated, but the world is better the more of them that are around.  The first time I used one to drill a pilot hole for a wood screw, it was a major "OOOOOH, that's what it's for!" moment.  The Wave gets demerits for not having one, and I'm antsy that the custom SAK I want to build won't have one...

I like Evil's awls.  They double as bayonets :)
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

Here's one for ya SlackOne... My super-sized wickedly sharp awl that I fabricated for my Wave. It dwarfs the awl of a Surge.....(standard Surge, that is. Wait til you see what I've got planned for my Surge in the future  ;) )

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of.  I think I could awl through my house with that one :D

*looks at his Wave, shaking his finger*  See what his Wave did?  And what do you bring to the game?  A useless mini driver.  Bad Wave!  Bad!

Evil, I'm just wondering...what kind of steel are you using for those awls anyways?  And are you getting it as sheet steel at the thickness you want to begin with, or are you working it down?  I have a pretty great idea for an awl that I doubt I could actually execute, but dreaming is fun :P

Hey SlackOne. The new blade and awl for the Style CS I fabricated out of 440C stainless. The monster awl I fabricated for my Wave is ATS-34... (very similar to 154CM)... good stuff. For some of my other mods, I have used D2 toolsteel as well as chrome vanadium. I could get most of these as sheets but not very economical since I don't mass produce anything... just one-off type projects. I get them as blade blanks, typically about 1-1/2"x12" in various thicknesses. The awl in my Wave makes the Surge awl look tiny, so I am already in the planning stages for the new awl for my Surge... I am thinking BG-42 would be very nice. Even the scissors I fabricated for my Wave make Surge scissors look small, but it will probably be quite a while before I decide to tackle making another set of scissors as it was quite an undertaking.....

Personal Nail File Mod
Reply #36 on: September 07, 2010, 01:15:06 AM
Not an expert modder like y'all are, but one thing that irked me right off on the Style CS was the personal nail file.

Unless someone was desperate for a screwdriver that nail file is all wrong. Should been like the Squirt S4 (top) where one could clean the gunk out from fingernails, or to pry up a sliver in which to grab better with them horrible tweezers.
(Micra's tweezers are the best so far!)

My Squirt S4's scales have gotten beaten up so not as good looking like newer the Style CS. When I'm out looking for a job or before an interview, or whenever, I like to keep my nails in check.

So went to work on the Style CS nail file (bottom) and made a much more friendlier nail cleaner tip. Files on both sides do as the metal has squared (sharp) corners - better for underside nail cleaning.

The next thing this brought to mind was taking a style and using it on the side of a style cs, but I think the space the file and scissors are in is where the the handles would have to meet with the tool head.

Hey there, gang. Sorry that I've been away again. This is my most busy time of the year and I don't get around here as much. I'm resurrecting an old thread of mine on a tool that never got completed. It was actually missing in action for a while. I recently found it again and want to see the project through this time around. I already made a new blade for it that I prefer. My taste in blade shapes and steels have changed over the years, so, the new blade will reflect that. I will also be doing other mods to it that I originally had planned to do. At one point, I thought that the style cs would replace my micra but in reality that turned out not to be true. That said, I think it will do a great job as a zipper pull on my manbag to always have handy as a backup tool   ;)

Hey there, AHB and thank you   This time around, it's only been weeks as opposed to years.....

Looking forward to seeing what you're doing with it now Evil.
Fast forward five years from when I first started this project, things have somewhat changed. I have decided that the first blade that I created no longer fits my needs. New blade has already been made and heat treated. Now it just needs an edge. I never liked the plastic scale from day one, so it definitely has to go. Going to go with the original plan and add a second layer. I always wanted it to have a medium/large flat driver in order for it to serve a role in my EDC. I use tweezers often but also never liked how they were implemented on this tool. They were difficult to get out, for me anyway. So, I'll have to address that as well. I am looking forward to coming full circle with this old project.....
