SOG Users United!
on: June 02, 2010, 04:41:34 PM
Hey guys! Well I was just thinking about how we have appreciation threads for a lot of tools and I thought that we should have a group here for guys who love their SOGs! So if you love your SOG(s), use this thread to post your battle stories and discuss SOG knives and tools!   :multi:

I guess I'll get the ball rolling when I went to Louisiana the people I was with used wire ties on the car top carrier, and the only thing we had to cut them was my SOG.

She saved the day (and the morons who did not think :twak:).

I love my Paratool. The sheath is high quality, the tool is solid and well made.

I'll post some pictures just as soon as she gets here.  :tu:

I've decided to go about 90% SOG from now on. I've tried just about every major multi out there and SOG just makes sense to me.

I agree. SOG tools just work best for me right now.

The only thing is the Paratool. I think it is a smart design with the pliers and all, but I don't know... the tool just doesn't work for me as a whole.

My complete EDC rotation is:

1 Spyderco knife  that I carry everyday
AND
5 MT's: 4 SOG's and a Spyderco Spyderench  that I rotate on a daily basis

That's it, and I guess it says a lot about how I feel about SOG's ( and Spyderco's ).

   SOG   Pocket PowerPlier   #S44
   SOG   PowerLock BO      #GSA
   SOG   PowerLock      # S63  EOD
   SOG   ToolClip   #S23
   Spyderco   Paramilitary   #C81GPBK
   Spyderco   Spyderench – USA made 2001   #T01S

Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Yes, it was eodtechs idea if I remember correctly. There is a thread around here somewhere about it.

Explain to me this whole SOG thing.  :)  I am a newbie to this and yet it sure seems that SOG multi tools have a very loyal fan base, why is that?  Why would you pick a SOG over a Leatherman for example?  What is the deal with the gears and the pliers on a SOG?

The big draw to me being able to switch out tools, the gears aside from having a great look they put more power into the plyer head

+1  - check the mods / customization that is possible with the interchangeability of the tools / implements - can't do that with a LM using a 1/4" wrench !

There are always trade off's when finding a tool that works for you. Don't follow what other people do, do what works best for your needs.   For me the compound leverage and the fact that you can easily trade out tools is more important than sexy looks or overall fit and finish. A perfect tool for me would be a LM Charge with compound leverage and easy to change tools.  :D

I agree fully with Gadget Guy.  For my work I use pliers and tools more often than knives, so the quick access of a great blade like the LM Wave was not utilized to it's full potential.  The Wave's pliers are however, crap.  By design, by default.  Not their fault!  As with all multitools (except for the obvious soggy exception), they lock in the closed position (requiring a strong poky object to lever them open) when cutting some materials, and are weak in grip.  SOG solved all of this, providing a design that stops the lock down and also allows the pliers to operate in a reverse fashion, with spreading power.  The negative to the compound leverage is that it means twice the distance travelled by the handles, so the stroke is smaller than a conventional multitool.  If I'm dealing with a bolt that large, I need a wrench anyway!  The SOG excells in gripping bolt heads, where as my Wave failed in most cases.

And of course SOGs feature easy tool swaps.  I went as far as to customize a hacksaw and carbide saw to go in my Powerlock.  I also mounted the V-cutter on the outside of the handle, since it doesn't need to be locked and is still safe out there.

I carry a LM folding blade in my pocket on a clip, and it serves all of my cutting needs.  If I'm using a knife, I want a real knife, not a rectangle (even a sexy smooth one like the Wave) with a blade sticking out.  Once I order a wirestripper and customize a file, I will be replacing the two blades in my Powerlock.  A new philosophy for me, as my multi's have always had a blade.  But I'll give this a try.

So, yes, we all have individual needs in a multitool, so investigate what works for you, and decide.  And switch it up if you want to.  I'd recommend trying out a Powerlock, see how it feels.

I have my first ever SOG anything.  I got a PowerLock multi in a trade.  I love it.  The fact that you can change out tools to make the multi whatever you need or want is just nice.  I for some reason prefer a full size multi over a pocket or keychain model.  :)
