Never had one do that on me  :think:

Maybe is was a replacement and not of as high a quality.

First I've EVER seen/heard os such a thing. Normal failure (in a split ring) is the coil pulling out or spreading, not snapping. Sorry about your bad luck.

Maybe it's further evidence of Vic quality going to the wall*

Actually I have had one like this before but it was on a second hand knife and, like Nuphoria suggested, I just assumed it was a poor replacement.  I'm only guessing but it seems likely to me that this isn't a component Vic makes themselves so this could be a supplier issue.
