CRKT M16-00F Carbon Fiber [Pics]
on: June 07, 2010, 12:09:21 PM
Here's some pics of my new CRKT M16-00F Carbon Fibre knife :D

I don't know why but I've always fancied a tanto edge blade so when I saw this knife I decided it would fit my needs. I don't think this is available to buy anymore i.e. discontinued.

As it has carbon fibre handles it does not have the Carson Flipper or their AutoLAWKS system  :-\ The up side is that this knife is so lightweight  :tu: I would like to get a knife that has those features at some point.

Blade: Overall length: 2.62" (6.7 cm)

Cutting edge: 2.62" (6.7 cm)

Thickness: 0.10" (0.25 cm)

Steel: AUS 118, 59-60 HRC

Handle: Closed length: 3.5" (8.9 cm)

Weight: 1.6 oz. (45 g)

Very nice looking indeed.  :tu:
There are quite a number of CRKT knives I think look super.  I just received
an M21 (my one and only CRKT folder) in a trade and other than it being LARGE I quite like it.  It's one company
though I don't really have access to play with their line up before purchasing, it's all mail order.
Nice skor though.  :)

Very, very nice.  I am partial to CRKT but the steel in the current M16 lineup is AUS 4, so you got lucky in scoring one of the older, better steeled versions.

Fantastic light weight on that knife.

I've often looked at the M16s and never pulled the trigger. How does it handle Dan?
I used to come here a lot.

Didn't even see this before, but...

If you can find one of the older M16s in either AUS-118 or AUS-8, they're not bad knives.  I had one and ended up having a liner problem and sending it to CRKT for a replacement, and got one of the newer versions back.

The newer versions (I think they switched over two years ago) are complete damned garbage through and through.  AUS 4 (HRC 55-57) steel, instead of the HRC 58-60 AUS-8 or AUS-118 the M16s were originally made in.  Untreated bronze washer mated to a single teflon washer.  Up and down movement in the lockup.  Bad, and I mean REALLY, REALLY bad blade centering issues.  Very stiff opening.

Hell, if I can find the knife (no guarantees), I'll send you it for free.

I liked my old M16.  One of my absolute beater work knives and it held up for quite a while for what I put it through.

That being said, CRKT has a really, really annoying habit of making their knife models worse over time.  My original Point Guard (which I carried for 9 years) had AUS-6M steel.  Not super fantastic, but not bad either - with the modified AUS-6 steel (molybdenum added to the mix) it took a very good edge.

When I tried to replace it on eBay, all the newer versions switched over to 420J2.  Ugh!

You can still find old stock, and only their cheap-o civilian models have AUS-4 slapped into them. Most of the professional line still has AUS-8. :D

And those carbon fiber scales sure do make it one hot mama.
Got those frog legs.

Only the Titanium-handled versions still have AUS-8.  It's either 8Cr14 or AUS-4 for the rest of them.  As it stands, I've handled just about the entire line and I do stand by the handling problems in the new versions of the M16.

As always, YMMV
