Spirit - grinding the file into a blade
on: August 19, 2007, 04:35:42 AM
has anyone tried this on their grinder, or do you think it possible? i was checking the stats on the file blade hardness and it seems as though its not quite as hard as the other blades, but still not too bad. it would be a thin/narrow light duty blade - is there enough meat in the file to achieve this? another blade would be more useable for me than the file, which i find nowhere near as good as a diamond type.
i know others have converted the serrated to a straight blade, but i'd like to keep the serrated on the spirit.

cheers

You probably could manage it, but due to the different tempering it wouldn't take a very good edge or hold it for any length of time.  You'd also lose the nice little metal saw built into the "bottom" of the file.

To be honest, I would suggest just carrying a small SAK with it instead of trying to mod another tool into a blade.

Actually file steel makes excellent knife blades. As long as you dont heat it up too much you will have no issues with it. I do Reenacting of the Fur Trade era and have made several very usuable knives out of files.

But I just got to ask. Is it going to be worth the effort. I am not trying to talk ya out of it, but I just cant figure out why you would want to do this.  Can the tool be replaced with a blade?

i almost envisaged the file becoming a small type filleting blade.  even if i just used it for slicing up my apple each day it would be worth it for me...i can't stand serrateds for that kind of thing.
if i pick up another spirit cheap, i'll make that the test mule.
