Well ain't this a crock
on: June 14, 2010, 07:35:37 PM
Hello everyone.  I got my hands on my first ever way to sharpen a knife.  I got my hands on a crock shapener.  Now I have to learn how to use it.  It has instructions on the bottom of it and used rods in two different levels of roughness.  It is old and it is used, but it should do for starters.  My question now is do I need to replace the rods or will they clean up?  Do you have any tips on using it properly?

OK I took the rods and placed them in soapy water while cleaning them with a yellow mild scowering pad.  That did help clean them up quite a bit.  :)  Now to play with the thing, there is a dull SAK calling my name.

Depending on the rods you may well be able to keep them clean with a pencil eraser.  That's what I use :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I am not sure but the rods sound ceramic to me.  I found out that the sharpener was bought in the mid 80's and the label on it says Cutlery World.

Those are great sharpeners, basically a pre runner to the Spyderco Sharpmaker.

So a sharpener like this is decent quality then?  This is my first attempt at knife sharpening so we will see.  I did play with that SAK and did 50 course rod stokes and 50 white rod strokes on each side of the blade.  left right, left right, etc 50 times on each set of rods.  That blade is sharp now, so I must have done it right.  LOL

50 is a bit excessive mate, you should get result's with about 20 stokes on each stone, and about 10 for touch up's on the fine rods :)

Thank you for clearing that up for me.  Now I know.  :)  So you use the medium stone for a dull blade and move to fine.  You would use the fine for just a touch up on an already sharp blade to maintain its edge, correct?

Don't use excessive pressure . It's a good system , will give you very sharp results .

I thought I would play with the sharpener by trying it on a dull, cheap kitchen knife that is old.  You know what, the knife will cut a car in half and then still slice a tomato.  :)  Just kidding, it did however put a nice edge on it.  It seems that using light preasure or no preasure and just using the knifes own weight works the best.  It is a bit awkward to use at first but you get use to how the blade angle is and how to place the knife straight on the rods.  I think it will work for me as a newbie knife sharpener, now all I need to do is practice with it.

The best thing to practice on is a cheap but moderate quality paring knife , real junk is unsharpenable as the steel just keeps bending until it breaks off . A cheap plastic handled Henkel paring knife is a good choice for three or four bucks .

I'm so jealous!  I have been trying to get my hands on a Lanskey turnbox(essentially the same sharpener) for awhile now.  I really need one, but the funds are tied up in bills right now.  I spend my last bit of fun cash getting my sideclip back.  Let me know how you like it for touching up your wave's blade.

The sharpener is my first ever dive in to knife sharpening so I have nothing to compare it to.  I like it a lot and it works well and is simple for me to use.  It gets the job done and fast.  I can certainly recommend it.
