Large frame Multi's .
on: June 18, 2010, 06:24:48 PM
How many here just don't find big Multi's like the Swisstool and Surge worth the weight penalty ? For me the functionality to weight ratio just isn't there . I might think differently is stranded on a desert island , or if I had just bailed out of a plane , but for normal urban work , and leisure EDC , and outdoor use I much prefer the midsized multi's like the Spirit and Wave .

I agree. I don't carry my large MT's when I'm off work. My Juice s2 is enough.

Good question.  I used to carry nothing but my original Supertool for about 5 years and never regretted it.  I picked up a PST and really never got along with it, just felt kinda flimsy compared to the Supertool.  However I'm now carrying either a Pulse or Fuse while at work and really don't miss the extra size, even though the tool gets used quite a lot.  On balance then it seems like I'm happy with a 4" multi, just so long as it's comfortable to hold. :D

I usually carry a PL, sheathed in my cargo pockets, don't like belt carry, the weight doesn't bother me to much since I'm a big guy with big hands, although ironically i carry a crunch, and a smaller plier tool (micra, mini bear)  in my pack, so maybe I'm just weird

Personally I've never minded the heavy multi's. If I want to go lighter I could go with my schrade or gerber, but with 12 or 13 years rocking the swisstool I am "at one" with the swisstool. If I change out I feel, I dunno....naked in a way. I can leave off the swisstool completely and feel less off than swapping out.

For my Murse or shop I don't care how much it weighs. I want every gizmo known to man to be on there.  :D If I have to carry it on my person I want it to be a light as possible.  :tu:  Right Now I'm carrying the SOG PPP and its at my max weight limit of 5oz for a multi. I almost never wear a belt or I would carry a larger multi with me.

What do you like/dislike about your full size Swisstool?  I think I want one so I can learn and see what is out there in a full size multi tool.  I have a Supertool and a Sog Powerlock.  I love my Wave with bit kit and extension, but it somehow does not seem as hefty as the Powerlock.  I do not mind the weight, I do not even know I am wearing the Wave with extension and bit kit on my belt, it does not bother me.  Now for pocket carry that would be different.

I was wearing shorts yesterday (cargo style with a belt), the milk white legs going to show that I definitely don't get to wear shorts all year round. :D

I ruled out EDC'ing a big multi ages ago. I use them for most things around the house, but for EDC it has to be Charge sized. Specifically, Charge TTi sized :P
I used to come here a lot.

I EDC’d a Paratool for almost 10 years and when I found this forum I ordered a Powerlock and fell in love with large MT’s. Have carried Charge ALX and TTi, Wave, PST and a PPP. Never liked them, except for the PPP that I carry from time to time, so they got traded.

The main reason that I don’t like small MT’s is because they are too small for my hands, the pliers are too small for my liking and I get the feeling that they don’t clamp down on nuts and bolts as good as a large MT, but that is probably just a weird thing I got going for me. I got a Skeletool that I am trying out and so far I think that I got a good companion for my PPP.

I carry a surge every day and after a while it feels weird if I carry a smaller tool. When I carry a wave it feels like I have a toy instead of a tool. :multi:

The heaviest MT is still a light load.

I know what you mean.  I like using larger tools like the Swisstool, Powerlock, and Supertool, but they are too heavy to carry with my other EDC gear (e.g., flashlights, spare batteries, PocketWrench II, loupe, tape measure, notepad, pens, keys).

When it comes to an EDC-able multitool, make mine a Spirit or Pulse.

Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

I think that big multi's are great in the backpack , or briefcase , but I'm pretty belt heavy already .

I have tried to carry bigger tools.  I have owned a Surge, Swisstool, and PL.  All were just too darn heavy in the end.  I like to stick with about 8 oz as my preferred ceiling for MT weight.  Any more and it starts to pull my briches down.

It took me some searching but I found a great sheath for the ST300 which is now my EDC. It's hardly noticeable on my belt and made of black nylon. I think it was intended to hold a can of pepper spray... but works perfectly!

I wish my blast sat a little more flat on my belt.  I don't like how it sticks out.  It catches on everything, but I am not too fond of the pancake nylon sheaths, so I will stick with the Leather one for now.
