OOPS I did it again!!!
on: June 19, 2010, 09:02:32 PM
Got my Spyderco H1 Saver Salt with yellow handles yesterday and was debating on what color should the scales be.

Before pic first. Saver Salt (right) next to my Salt I.

Liquid Rit dye was used as this was all I had left from previous jobs. I used a standard coffee mug filled with hot watter and eye balled the amount of dye needed, a bit of red and a bit more of orange.

Sorry for a crappy pic but this is the result and there's a day and night difference from the previous job I did.

Looks great!  Where do you get that dye?  Do you have to take the knife apart to do that?  I'd love to dye mine green.

Rid dye can be found in supermarkets and some hardwear stores, if not ebay had them in different colors in both powder and liquid variety.

I didn't soak the knife for too long this time(see Ladybug dye mod), dunking it for half a minute or so then giving it a rinse in cold water to check on the color and dipping it again untill a desired shade of orange was met. It's always easier to dye it again if the color is too pale as opposed to getting it a lighter shade if overdone.

Salt knives are pinned and cannot be dissasembled so the whole knife was dunked in the dye solution.

With one of my "mods" (a green ffg Endura) I tried a complete dissasembly but I stripped one of the hande screws so the whole knife went in on that one as well, the said knife also got a duracoat paint job on the blade. I keep the knife in too long and the shade of green was too dark for my liking. Picks of that mod haven't beed posted yet.

Good luck Kelly and let us know how you dye job comes along, as well as ingridients and recipie used. V.

Thank you Gareth and David and WhichDawg

@ WhichDawg The Ladybug is holding up well mostly due to the dye absorbing deeper into the frn handles and little use. On the Saver salt there are a few spots where the dye is rubbing off from edc due to the dye not absorbing too deep in order to get the right shade. I can alway dye it again or leave it as  V.

and after :D

Got a bottle of Denim Blue Rit dye and a a bottle of Apple Green. The Greenish PE Tasman Salt was treated with the blue dye and came out the color you see :o (second form the right), the SE Tasman wouldn't take the green dye so I added a bit of blue and scarlet red and it came out Coppery or very light coyote brown.
