Metal detecting...a great hobby.
on: July 08, 2010, 03:55:00 PM
Anyone out there like to search for treasure using a metal detector? I do on occasion. I go out with the expectation that I won't find much, and in most cases, I am proven right. On the rare occasion, I may find a nice old coin or two. Regardless of the finds, I go out to relax. There is something to be said about strapping on a pair of headphones, and doing a repetitive action that sooths the worries. Up here in Canada, you won't find much of value, but in Europe...

Talk about a treasure hunter's dream.

Just in case you were wondering, I have two metal detectors. a Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300, and a Bounty Hunter Land Star.
A little Leatherman information.

While I doubt there's much to be found in your neck of the woods due to all the rock under your feet and relatively short history of refined metals, detecting is a very popular hobby around here.  Europeans have been coming to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for over 1,000 years, and much of the landscape here is silt and sand, meaning that you can detect on the same place ten different times and come up with ten different results.

I'm not into detecting, but I have a few friends that do.

I was just reading about this story, so cool! I hope they (gov) don't rob him blind and give him his far share.

I luv metal detecting but haven't done it in awhile (broken detector) but one day I hope to get back into it.

like you said it's so relaxing and good exercise and you can find some cool things, even if they are not worth
anything, it's still interesting :tu:

If America was discovered by Columbus, why did old Chris choose to name the New World after Amerigo Vespucci:D  Can you imagine if Columbus had used Amerigo's last name?  North Vespuccia and South Vespuccia, and the United States of Vespucci?  Would you be proud to call yourself a Vespuccian?  :D  Or is it a case of a rose with another name?

Of course Amerigo was retracing Viking routes when he "discovered" the New World too, just like Leif Ericson followed the route of Bjarni Herjolfsson, who discovered the New World that he called Vinland after getting lost in a storm.

There are old Norse settlements all over Newfoundland (Vinland) that date back to about 1,000 AD.

That's about the extent of my intellectual abilities for today- I think I need a nap....

Actually, there's also hypotheses on the Vikings not being the earliest.  The History channel had a documentary entitled "Who Really Discovered America," which is definitely worth the 90 minutes to watch. :)

Not to worry, there are very stricked rules about how big finds are valued and paid for.  Basically I believe the money will be split between himself and the land owner, neither of them will be unhappy with their spilt I suspect.

Nothing wrong with metal detecting so long as it's done responsibly.  Ask an archaeologist how much harder their job is when the site they are working on has had all the datable evidence removed and not recorded.  You wouldn't get a happy answer. ;)

That's pretty much obvious- if modern humans evolved in Africa, as most anthropologists agree is most likely, then the Native Americans had to have come across long before the Europeans managed it.  But, in defense of the Europeans, they didn't have the benefit of a land bridge to walk across.  :P

Still, it goes beyond that, too; some of the Native Americans, it's been theorized, also came from Polynesia via boat.  Still, take 90 minutes and watch the documentary; it's rather fun. :)

I watched that. I believe that ancient man did a lot more and knew a lot more than we give him credit for.
