Powerlock EOD s63 or s62?

Hi all,

I really really really want a powerlock with a v-cutter but I am not sure whether I would have any sort of use with the blast cap crimper.

Does this feature have a lot of uses so I should look at getting one, or is it a case of, if you don't use blast caps, don't get one?

That's pretty well it.  I also hear that it's handy for coaxial cable, but I've never tried that either so I couldn't really tell you.

I bet it would crush the hell out of an almond too!

Of course, since I don;t like almonds, I probably wouldn't see any point to getting it.

I've never found any legitimate uses for the cap crimper.    It's not sharp, so it won't strip wire. When closed, the hole that remains measures 7/32" (5.5mm) which is too big to crimp most common wire ends.

I do like almonds though.....

It doesn't take up room, and for that one time you need to crimp some large wire or cable, you'll have it

That was going to be my next question.  Does having the blasting cap crimper mean you don't get something else or is it a "free" tool?

It's a "free" tool.  You don't give up anything to have it.

Overall is this tool actually as good as it looks?

The PowerLock is a bit of a bulky tool compared to others in it's category, but is perfectly functional and quite popular.  Other tools in it's category  are the Leatherman Surge, SuperTool series (discontinued), and Core, along with the SwissTools from Victorinox, the Freehand from Gerber  and the SwissGrip from Wenger.  All of these are heavy duty tools that can take a significant pounding, and should easily stand up to a lifetime of use and even a significant amount of abuse.

The big benefits of the PowerLock series (and each tool has it's particular strengths, you just have to decide what strengths interest you most!) are the compound leverage pliers and the replaceable implements.  If you should ever break one of the implements, want a different configuration or selection or merely want to take it apart to clean it, the PowerLock comes apart fairly easily with a 1/4" hex driver or wrench.  There are a few drawbacks to the design as well, but like anything else there are tradeoffs.

You may also want to consider looking at the PowerLock 2.0, due out in November I think.  Also, you could also have a look at the PowerPlay tools from Paladin, which are manufactured by SOG, and have many similar features, but a few different options as they are optimized for data/telecom workers.  If you work with wiring of any sort, and are in the UK so need an "excuse" for a locking blade, then that might be a good option as well.
