If you are like me, you don't want too much redundancy in your EDC. Some is okay, especially with blades, but not too much in terms of tools.
One thing I do not like so much about the Surge is the off board file/saw. I'd like to have two exchangers and just have both mounted all the time. In fact, I can't understand why LM won't just make a Surge sized Juice XE6. But I digress...
If I am going to carry a SAK and a Surge, I'd like to mount
either
the saw
or
the file, and then count on the SAK for the other. No need to carry that loose file/saw blade around.
And so, this brings us to what I guess might be a heated debate:
Which is better? The SAK 91mm saw or the Surge saw? The SAK 91mm file, or the Surge file? Maybe the SAK is best for both? Perhaps LM is king of both?
Which one would you leave at home?
I am inclined the leave the LM saw and mount the file. You?

The LM file is king, and a 91mm SAK saw is a very effective one...equal to or better than LM IMO

Here's my feelings
1. For green wood and vines the Vic saw is king. The teeth and saw stiffness are perfect.
2. For construction lumber, the LM saw works better. The Vic saw splinters the wood too much.
3. The diamond coat file on LMs is top notch. While the new style Vic file works very well, the LM diamond coat file is better at sharpening tools.

Great topic
Now that I have a choice of manufacturers I have thought the very same thing about which saw to use
I look forward to reading more views like Mr. W's above
I have found the saw on my Sog Powerlock to be quite worthy

The Leatherman diamond file is one of the great multitool components IMO
. I suggest mounting the file on the Surge and pairing it with a Farmer.

I think both saws are good. The Victorinox file is no slouch, but the diamond-coated saws on Leathermans just rock.

Why haven't you got a Farmer yet!

I'veonly really used saw's on green wood's, and I much prefer the saw's on Vic's, as they cut on both the pull and push, and tend to clean the saw while using them
LM saw's aren't to bad either, but do gum up pretty quick
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I know my SOG saw isn't as good as either!
I think Vic saws have the edge for me too, especially the larger ones.

Agreed, but I have used a vicky saw and they're quite nice.

I love the diamond file on my PSTII. And the wood saw on my farmer. I don't like the files on the small vics (like the Manager and the Classic) that much. I would like to use them for my fingernails, but they suck, in my opinion. I only use them if I don't have a better nailfile close. The file on the LM Micra is even worse

The Diamond file is superb!
The saws are both good.
So id say, carry the LM File and a Vic Saw.
I would suggest getting a remgrit-saw for the Surge though. That can be pretty handy for anything else than wood.

removable (diamond) file = win
removable saw =
Take the surge with the file for all your filing needs, and use the vic saw, as you never need to remove a saw for any uses like a file.

Yes, that has been the reason for me to get the removeable diamond file: It can even sharpen the tool it is mounted in.
