Scale polishing and cleaning

As the new proud owner of a used swisschamp, I am wanting to give the scales some tlc to brighten up it's appearance.

Anyone have any tips?

You can also get decent results with metal polish or even toothpaste.  Of course if you want new scales, that's pretty easy too!

A vise with padded jaws seems to work best for me.  I remove one side and replace it then do the other to avoid getting one side on unevenly.

Of course that's just the removal... to put them on, Joe hit it right on the money.  If you don't have a vise you can also use pliers, but be careful.  Use large ones with a slip jointed mouth, open them up as far as they'll go and put something in there to help even the pressure- something flat, long and reasonably stiff.
