1962 Main blade damaged tip
on: August 12, 2012, 12:10:14 PM
Does anyone know if it's even possible to repair a damaged main blade tip?
I've never done this and don't even know if it's possible.
It's on an alox 62 Soldier.

From my limited experience this steel deforms (bends) quite easily. You may be able to straighten that blade tip back close to the original shape with just your hands and a vise. I'd use a vise with the jaws covered in some thick felt tape or paper to not scratch/dent, insert that tip in there (one bend at a time) and carefully straighthen by pushing the rest of the blade/the SAK in the opposite direction, then insert the tip into the vice a bit more, repeat, etc, until it gets as straight as possible. If you will do this be very careful not too apply too much force not to bend it worse than it is. Start just with a tiny push, then check, repeat adjusting with a tiny bit greater force if needed.

Somebody else may have a better advice than this.

In any case, good luck!

Yup you can for sure bend blades.  Ive been the pruner blade so it fits in with the main blade better.  The problem of course is if you bend it too much it snaps.  So.. you probably have a 50/50 shot at bending it without it snapping off. :D  The only way to bend back metal 100% of course is to remove the temper, bend, and re temper, but thats not an easy task.

Bending is too risky.  Lay it on a solid flat surface (make shift anvil) and hit it with a blacksmith's hammer.

I think this sounds less risky as I don't want to risk making more damage.
Many thanks for all the great advice so far.  :salute:

Only hit it, if your going to, on the spine part of the blade (thickest). Lay it on a flat piece of solid steel. Tap lightly with a flat hammer(important). Go slow and take your time. I've straightened countless blades this way. The only ones I've broke the hammer slipped and hit the beveled part. Stresses when it bent has already made it weaker. So when you straighten it, it will be even more so. If you to help this effect, heat it to 200f, this temp will not effect tempering, but will allow it to be straightened easier.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

The few times I've done it I first left the knife under a lamp for a while until it was warm to the touch. Haven't snapped a blade yet, though that may be pure luck.
