Help! Which EDC SwissTool should I buy?
on: September 04, 2007, 12:31:53 AM
I need help from you guys to decide which SwissTool that should replace my LM for EDC! I can not decide weather to buy the SwissTool or the ST Spirit.

The Spirit looks nice and is lighter (which is good) but I have some doubts about the serrated knife blade. The SwissTool is heavier (which is bad) but has a plain blade (I like that) and looks more robust for heavy-duty use.

Please help me out! Which one should I buy?  ???

Thinking of it, this is actually a pleasant problem

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Welcome to the forums! One thing to consider in choosing a new EDC is your daily routine, and just how often, and how hard you use your tools. One thing to to add confusion to the mix,is the Spirit S,which drops the scissors in favor of adding a non-serrated spear point blade.Dilemmas don't come any more pleasant than yours.

I agree with the above.  If you need spectacular ruggedness in your tool, go for the full size SwissTool.  If you don't plan on hard use the Spirit may be for you.

I have an Original SwissTool that I bought right after they were introduced.  It has been used for all sorts of tasks and carried under all sorts of conditions.  Though it shows some use and wear, it is still solid and reliable.

I considered the Spirit, but it wasn't for me.

Good luck in your search.  If all else fails, buy both.  You could always have an EDC tool and a Sunday/Special Occasion tool.

Yeah, I really do not see a definate advantage of one over the other.  They are both good tools.  I have both.  Each one has its attributes that may sway you in one direction or another.  Handle them before you buy if you can, but I am sure that either one will not disappoint.

I say the Spirit since it seems to be a tough tool that is a bit easier to carry.  The blade is not an issue to me.  In fact, I like the blade.

Best of luck... I hope you get the one that's best for you.

If the full size swisstool is going to be too heavy then you wont EDC it and it will get left in the car or at home . I dont notice my Swisstool RS on my belt at all but then again I've had a swisstool there for years .I do own a spirit also but it doesnt get half the use its bigger brother gets . The best advice is put yourself in a scenario ( the kind of thing that could happen in your day ) and ask your self would I like the spirit or the swisstool to help me out of it .
If you do a search on here there is loads of photos of the Spirit and ST alongside each other . If you cant find them I can easily post a couple on here for you .Last of all dont forget there is three versions of the Swisstool and two versions of the Spirit . If you dont know the difference between them then we can help with that too  ;D

Thanks for all your help. I think that in the end it will be a Spirit due to its lighter weight. I want to be able to EDC it and just as you said, if it is too heavy I will leave it at home or in the car.

Unfortunately it is now evening in Sweden so the shops are closed  :-[ But tomorrow is a new day.....
