Spyderco UKPK G-10 v FRN Lightweight
on: August 12, 2010, 02:58:24 AM
You may have seen that Dan (cerbera147) recently acquired one of the new Lightweight UKPKs. Well he very kindly lent it to me so that I could do a comparison - cheers Dan

Here's the result of a day's playing with the UKPK FRN version.

I hope it's of some use!

EDIT: Mods - is this better in here or in reviews?
I used to come here a lot.

Didn't know about the half backspring :(  I wonder why that's the case?  I can't imagine it makes it any cheaper to produce

I think on a non-locker reducing the tension is a bit daft, even with the choil being as it is.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I have to say Neil - the lack of spring is a bit of a let-down.

Now, I say that having spent the best part of 10 months carrying the G-10 version, so maybe I'm making too much play of it, but it seems to be a "feature" that was totally avoidable. I wonder what the thinking was.

The only legitimate reason I can think of is to reduce the weight, and it is quite a bit lighter.

Maybe but I think I'd put up with the extra 10-20g for a more secure blade personally.

Yup - totally agree.

It's still an excellent knife though, it's just a shame about that one negative point.

I'll take some photos tomorrow in daylight and add them to this thread :tu:

Could it be simply to change the center of gravity while keeping the handle shape the same?

EDIT: Also, your silly accent makes me laugh. :D

Great review / comparison Dave  :tu:

It would be interesting to find out their reasoning on the backspring. Surely not just just for its weight and cost  :-\

For less adventurous among us it is a good starter Spyderco that is nice and legal  :tu: I remember reading somewhere the colour choice with these FRN knives was to make them more sheeple friendly and less tactical. There was talk of black scales but I don't know if anything will come of it.

I would like to add an original orange UKPK G10 at some point, they're just so damn expensive  :(

They appear quite regularly on British Blades for about £80, however my view is that for an extra £10 - 15 I'd rather buy new :D

What are the differences between the leaf blade and the drop point blade?

This one will keep me going until I get my hand on an orange G10 UKPK.

Nice job Dave  :tu:

Very comprehensive. Mine has obviously been tightened more and so can't be thrown open in any way. I still think they are good value compared to the originals, especially the one that I'm selling  :D

Great comparison Dave - very enjoyable.

For a £40 knife it looks like a great deal.  As an original UKPK owner though, that backspring means I'll be sticking with what I have already got.
I'm back!!

Great comparison Dave.  I'm not sold on the drop-point blade shape myself, nothing wrong with it, but I just think the leaf shape is more visually appealing.  Once they come out with a lightweight FFG leaf blade I'll be taking another look at one of these. :)

Same here Gareth - I definitely prefer the leaf shaped blade.

I think maybe it's because I'm used to it though - the drop point does have a nice sculpted finish, which is nice. I'm sure I could learn to love it!

Same here but again I wondered if it was just because I was used to the leaf shape
