Rough Rider to work
on: August 17, 2010, 04:59:00 PM
As posted before I just received a few of these well made Rough Rider knives.  I've been
edc'n the Kershaw Skyline for the past couple of months at work which has gone quite
well but it's time for a change up.  I've never taken a slippie to work with me ever so I'm
looking forward to seeing how this one performs.  First off, on the plus
side is the very thin blades, which I'm hoping, coupled with the 440 steel, will perform
admirably on the breakdown of cardboard.  Second plus, is this one, obviously will fit right
down in the pocket so no more catching it on stacked bun trays and having the clip catch
and rip the whole knife out of pocket.  On that last note I've bent probably about 5 clips
over the years on tac style knives.  I've really gotta learn how to navigate properly.  :D
Just thought I'd post a few a couple of before pic's, I don't think it might look as pretty
after a few months in the Restaurant.  ;)

Sean,

Now be mindful, as pretty as they are MoP is not a real durable handle material. It won't take the same abuse as synthetics. And in the same thickness it's not as durable as bone or stag. Pearl is fine for light duty but if your pocketknives get bumped around alot, or dropped often, Pearl will crack, and chip, much easier than most other handle materials.

The plus side to the one you are carrying is that it isn't pinned, so it isn't thinned in certain areas. But do be aware.

I see the Rough Riders in SMKW catalogs and it says something like MoP/stag is a natural material prone to cracking around the pins and bolsters. Have you seen this in your knife/knives?

After seeing some RRs on the forum I think I'll have to get a few and see what they are like. Thanks!

Haven't really seen too much of it on my knife yet.  As time moves on maybe I start to notice something.  It
might have not been the best scale material to choose for work but it's all I really have that's pocketable so
it's the one I am using.  At 10 bucks I'm not all that worried.  For it's first day out it worked just fine.

That's the great thing about inexpensive knives, if you lose or break one, it really isn't a big deal.
