A tool becomes a cult
on: August 20, 2010, 10:40:50 PM
Recently I visited a knife exibition "The Swiss Army knife. A tool becomes a Cult".

It's located in Zürich in the "Landesmuseum" (National Museum).
 Link to official Website.

You can buy or order a brochure.
(see the 2 first fotos)

It's very interesting and you can see many different types of knives through the whole history.
Of course a big part are Victorinox SAK.

If you are in the area of Zürich go and visit it!

For the others I took a few pictures.
The pictures are not very good, because I had to take them through glass and sometimes the light was bad.

You can also build your one SAK (Spartan) under expert guidance.
I know some of you have already done this in different shows or on the road bus.

The guy on the workbench told me today all 91mm SAK are build by automat.
But other models like 111mm Knives are still assembled manually!

 Link to some pictures..

It kind of looks like a meat slicer guide for making perfectly even slices everytime.

Nice pictures of the prototypes!
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Very nice! Some peculiar looking tools there, like the scales with pencil sharpener

Anyone know if there's a current model SAK with potato(/apple) peeler? Either speicific or as a blade add on like the photos

Really Great! Thank you!  the only thing I really regret not getting on ebay was the 1977 catalog that recently appeared and went for big money and we've seen no mention of it since... and of course no information as to it's contents.

I might check it out (at night, ninja suit, with pink panther theme music playing in the background). haven't been to Zürich yet, though its not far from me. Can you recommend any other places in the town for SAK purchases?

You may check out Marco Lorenzi. It's not far from Museum.

To be honest I'm seldom in Zürich and do not know other knife shops there....  ::)

How rare are these very old style red Swiss Army knives?  The one on the right below.  Reminds me of the original orange scale variants, but the red is much better looking.

It`s a Wenger Soldierknife with Grillon-scales. They were made between 1957 and 1964. Like the old red Alox Soldierknives they are most wanted by collectors.

I spy an old large-font LEATHERMAN PST down in the corner of this photo. Was there anything else in the display about it?

That place is my dream afternoon out!

We have a pencil museum somewhere round here - maybe they can do a special combined tour with that groovy pencil sharpener :D
