Neat Android apps
on: September 12, 2010, 09:10:57 AM
so i love my Droid right

i keep kinding neat apps to waste my time :D

Scanner Radio- listen to police, fire, emt in your area
Barcode scanner- scan those weird square barcodes and it takes you to information regarding the product. Reviews, prices too
Photobucket- this one is handy especially for loading pics of your fav tools to share with us. It auto uploads any pics you take and slaps it into the IMG code for you.

of course there is Pandora internet radio, Facebook, Ebay all the regular stuff too.

Android users share some of your app finds :pok: ;)

I'd love to get my hands on an Android phone... it's looking like my best bet is an Orange Boston:

http://www.gsmarena.com/gigabyte_gsmart_g1305_boston-3201.php

for 19eur plus my points... maybe when my current 18month contract runs out...

edit: should point out that it's running 1.6 and I was hoping at least 2.1

yes, but it's up to the phone vendor/manufacturer to update. I think I'll stay away from it until they update. Every bit of info from my teleco here seems to point at it coming with 1.6, with no info about any updates yet.

I know 2.2 is out and about, I've been doing some research into nonsanctioned updates for that model phone, seems to work but some things don't... like the GPS... I think I'll wait either way. I believe there's still 3 or 4 months left on my last 18month contract for my Samsung Tocco Lite... (damn shame it's not an android...)

Android is very tinkerable with but I'm not personally convinced that at present its an OS for the masses.  I've seen far too many issues with far too many phones.  In fact that seems to be somewhat the issue, trying to keep the OS working and updated on so many varied hardware platforms.

Its still quite young and perhaps things will settle down in a year or so. In the meantime I think I'd be happier using it as the OS on a tablet than a phone. Its easier to forgive hiccups on something your playing around with probably at home on the sofa than when your trying to make phone calls and generally get things done whilst out and about.

I tend to think that of smartphones in general to a certain extent but some hardware OS configurations seem better suited, more stable than others.

that's why I want a 'droid... I'd like to tinker... but... my current phone is totally closed, can't even make my own apps apart from java... which tbh doesn't always work that smoothly either. Best thing I've managed to add was Opera 10 mini, blows the doors off the default browser.

I hear the newer versions of Android should be better (and 3 is not so far off!), and from what I read lately the current 'droid is not really suited for tablets as it's made with phones in mind?

I love my HTC Hero, fantastic phone and as mentioned, insanely customizable  :) Rooted mine (givs you access to everything) and installed a custom version of android which has loads of nifty features and lets me overclock it, now it runs as fast as the HTC desire which is rather nice  :D

As for good apps,
AndChat - IRC chat for android, done insanely well
dropbox - lets you access an online storage site via your phone like a drive.
gmote - control your pc using your phone, either as a mouse, browsing folders or as a remote for your mp3 player
LiftPro - Weight lifting recording app, helps keep tabs on your progress in the gym
SportyPro - gps enabled run/cycle/walk/any other cardio tracker with automatic uploads to its website and analysis tools
Layar - the best augmented reality app out there, lets you view info about whatever you're looking at through the camera
wikitude - another great augmented reality app
RockPlayer - lets you play most video files
shopsavvy - scan a barcode in a shop, it will tell you where you can get that item cheaper nearby or online, plus bring up reviews
UK National Rail Train Departures - UK only but really good app for finding when trains leave from your locaal station
Zedge - p2p wallpaper/ringtone sharing app, millions of them tog et from one place
WaveSecure - track, lock, backup and wipe your phone remotely if you lose it :)

Games

Guns & Glory - great rpg-like take on the tower defense game
Robo Defense - classic tower defense but done very well
Abduction - tilt the phone to bounce animals upwards, very good fun
Slugs - hard to get to grips with but addictive game
SNESoid/anything by the same developer - emulators of old consoles for your phone :) PSXoid even lets you play playstation 1 games on the go

neil- after having my droid for close to a year i can just about agree with you.  i think that for most people who want to facebook tweet and what ever else it seems to work rather well.  even for my dad who is very smart but dumb as hell when it comes to tech he can get it working rather well.  yes its young but so is iOS.  there will always be room for growth and with android you have more flexability then with winmo or iOS... i am darn sure i will never get another platform when it comes to my mobile phone...  and i really cant wait to get my hand on some gingerbread love....  froyo has been sweet and my phone is rocking about as fast as it can but it really dosent have a whole lot left for growth.... so i will need to upgrade soon (end of the year or so)...

Yes Allan, with a keybord. I miss having real keys when texting and to be honest I have never grown accustom to a 100% touch interface.

I haven’t and I’m not that keen on doing it either since I still would be typing on a touch screen. I miss and want solid keys for me to write on.

I'm with you on that Medic.  I like to be able to look at my screen while I'm typing, not my fingers all over my screen.  Luckily they have such doodads just for folks like us.

Too bad I'm too cheap to spring for a data rate :P

There's plenty of room to see what you're typing on the Desire.  :tu: But different strokes, for... :)
