Been a while....
on: September 18, 2007, 01:54:13 PM
It's been a little while since I went on a bit of a spree, so I kind of splurged recently and ordered a Wenger Alinghi, Buck X-Tract, ByrdWrench and I got a deal on eBay for an old US made Spyderwrench that I couldn't pass up.

Even worse, I am watching a Gerber MP600 on eBay that I am desperately hoping will go well above what I want to pay for it.

I'm really looking forward to these tools, more so than many others I get.  The USA SpyderWrench is another piece of multitool history and it will be nice to compare and contrast it with the new ByrdWrench, and eventually the new Taiwan SpyderWrench I'll eventually get.  The Alinghi looks like a fascinating new tool, and I am really enjoying the new Ranger series from Wenger.  I liked the old Rangers, and I'm not usually too big on change for things I like, but they really done good with the new ones.  The X-Tract is something I have been wanting for a while, more out of curiosity than anything else, but I finally made the decision to take the plunge and get it.

Now all I need is a multitool that can fix the sad shape my wallet is in...

And, of course, the waiting begins!

Wouldn't one of those old AlMar tools fix your wallet?  :P

Sounds like a fine bunch of goodies you got coming. Which blade style did you get on the Spidy?

I believe it is the combo edge.

Would that make it a 4 legged SpyderEdge?

If anyone is interested, here's some pics of the SpyderWrench I won.

I'm pretty stoked, but is that the way the blade tip is supposed to look?  It looks to me as if it's been reprofiled after the tip was broken.

Hmm... I don't have one, but it doesn't look quite right to me either. I'd guess you're right and it was reprofiled.

It doesn't say anything about that in the description.  I would think that significant damage like that would have to be mentioned, wouldn't it?

I would have thought so, Someone who owns one would be able to give a better opinion than mine though.
Edit:
I thought the tip should look more like and old Delica. I'm just basing this on my memory, which is pretty shot right now... I had a test on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday, and I'm not all here if you know what I mean :P

Well if it is, maybe I'll have to contact the seller on arrival and see if some kind of discount is warranted.  I'd hate to send it to Sal for repair and get a Taiwan blade back!

Defender,  If I recall correctly, the original Spyderench was offered only in serrated and plain, not combo edge.  That looks like a cheat.   >:(   I'm pretty sure it was reprofiled.  Can you post a photo of the other side of the blade?

Was it also apparent in the auction photos?

Actually, I believe it was offered in a combo edge as well. (But it still looks like Def's was re-profiled a bit)  :(

Could be...  but the one in your photo is a new one that is made in Taiwan.

I found this photo (not a very good photo unfortunately) of an old Spyderench that sorta looks like the one Defender bought.   ???  But the edge is more pointy.  I still think that the edge may have been reprofiled.

Oops, hadn't noticed that.

Lonediver says he has all three (plain, serrated, combo, all USA)

That being said, I'm agreeing about the re-pro likelihood.

The tip is indeed broken, but not too badly.  I'll be communicating with both the seller and a rep at Spyderco about options.  I'll keep you all informed.  Meanwhile, I have to say after only a few minutes of playing with this thing that it's pretty neat but I'm not certain it would make a solid EDC.  I'll have to see what the new ByrdWrench is like before I make up my mind, since this one may just be worn out, but at the moment it seems like a bunch of good ideas welded together into a tool the same way a highway is a bunch of potholes cemented together.

It's definatley not a flowing design is it, but it was probably the only way they could get around all the various patents ;D

It's not too bad really.  If it was to be a user it would be fine, but as a collector, and one who paid a small fortune for it, it's a bit much.

Well I heard back from Spyderco and they will be happy to re-grind the blade for me and make it pretty again, but I don't think I'll bother with that.  Unfortunateil they don't have any blades like this one kicking around anywhere and so they can't replace it.  I think I can re-grind it myself easily enough, but I guess this one is destined to be a user.  I guess my search for a SpyderWrench will continue...

I'm ok with it, for now at least.

There's two out of four down- the Alinghi arrived last week, and I have a review ready to post on the main site, just need some pictures of it yet.

Still waiting on the ByrdWrench and the X-Tract, which I should hopefully see soon.  Both are en route, it's just the mail being the mail now.  Of course this being Friday, and it raining outside, I am certain I won't get any mail.  I think we are "accidentally" skipped on Fridays so the mailman can get home faster.  >:(

Yeah, they have been focusing more on larger knives lately, haven't they?  Well, except for the Evolution and EVO Grip scales, the recent rash of fancy colored ALOX, the Nail Clippers (I'd hate to see them in 120mm!) and a few others.  I think the general public is more interested in the bigger models which is why they seem to be getting all of the press, but there have been some good advancements in the smaller sizes as well.

I'm not disputing the strides they've made in the smaller sizes, but there evolution rather than evolution :)

I would like to see some of the feature's of the 111-120mm shrunk down on to the 85mm and 91mm ie the one hand opening , on say a huntsman for instance.

Interesting idea, but it would either necessitate a re-arrangement of tools, a re-design of the knife as a whole or it would only be useful for lefties.  If you look at the 91mm series, the blades are all on the "wrong" side to be accessible with the right thumb.

It's possible, but I doubt we'll see it any time soon.
