Added pocket clip to my Vic Pioneer alox
on: September 27, 2010, 06:11:03 AM
I decided I could use a pocket clip on my Victorinox Pioneer in red alox.  Already having seen photos of Farmers with pocket clips made by Swiss Bianco, I figured it would be an easy mod.  I had another aluminum handled pocket knife with a pocket clip mounted on it, so I removed it and mounted it on my Pioneer.  I think it looks great and really adds to the function of this knife.

Something I was happy about was the fact that the metal screws self tapped themselves into the alox scales.  I was concerned I would need to manually tap the holes after I drilled them, but my tap kit doesn't have a tap this small.  I tested one screw and found that it actually tapped the hole very well.  I presume the steel is harder than the aluminum.

Nothing special right:

Oh wait, now I see something different:

Superb job, and very useful too :)

So you didn't need to even drill a tiny pilot hole for the screws?

He did drill a hole, but he didn't have to tap them...

It usually means to use a special cutting tool that will cut threads into the hole. Usually most tap and die sets I have seen for regular public use are not that small.

Great job.  It's good that you didn't need to tap the hole, this opens it up to more folks to attempt.  I just wish it was easier to add a clip to an OHT.  When I did mine a few years ago, I had to tap b/c the screws went into the stainless liner.

Unfortunately I just grabbed them off another knife, so I do not know who makes the clip or screws.  I can tell you the pilot hole I drilled was 5/64" and worked perfect (just slightly smaller than the screws, which allowed the metal screws to bite into the aluminum.  Funny thing, my big power drill was dead, and I was impatient while waiting for the battery to charge.  So I actually drilled these partially by hand.  I first drilled a smaller 1/16" hole with my other drill that uses hex bit mounted drill bits (doesn't have a 5/64" drill bit).  I then used the T-handle that came with my tap kit, and mounted up my normal 5/64" drill bit.  I used this to hand drill out the holes in the alox scale.  It is amazing how soft that aluminum is compared to the drill bit.

Here are some photos of the Pro-Tech knife I stole the clip off of.  It is a button release ("switch blade" style) I received as a gift from my father when I was younger (in the 1990's).  The blade in this knife is very small, just 1.75" or 43mm.  Needless to say, it doesn't get any serious use...especially to be consider an EDC with a clip.  The ATS-34 blade ("hip" steel in the 1990's) is not very sharp and I have yet to sharpen it (I only sharpen soft steel like my Vics).  Basically it is a desk drawer knife, so it was rip for the taking.
