Letter frequency analysis is not helping... yet :P
Can you give us a hint? :pok:

It looks like a Playfair cypher with a weird, big alphabet square?
There's 26 groups of letters and 26 letters in the alphabet... no coincidence I guess? :pok:

My possible solutions start with UOEPV, JYNXB and LKFYB, so I'm guessing I'm not even close :P

got this so far, but don't know if I'm doing the correct decoding: "my civil war class is rather boring I think the ethics professor is odd but ..."

How can it be NOT correct if you've come that far? :D

This is what I could get, there's something in the middle missing.

problem with "Nwsxg" ? I made a slight mistake it should be "Nwsxh" and should translate to enjoy.

Also, mind telling the class how you decoded it?

Hah, first thing I tried yesterday was a simple ROT 13, the last 5 digits translate to ANERD... First 5 digits translate to MYCIV with ROT 14. So I guess it's a ROT(x) with a variable x (Caesarian Shift).  ::)
So, it's not really your own code :pok:

That one I had figured out it might be "enjoy" instead of "enjox". But there are about four "fivelets" before that which I can't decode: weqvo efgbu hwdix frhav. I managed to get something like  "fall owing stupids zet ?? ", got stuck here, then skip to end and did the "decode" backwards until I could.

How have I decoded it? I assumed from start this should be some caesar/rotor based cypher, i.e. rotating letters on alphabet. But each letter did not have a single correspondence, so a number of rotations were being used (under my
hypothesis, that is). As you have the text divided in "fivelets", I assume each fivelet should have its own rotation.

So I made a quick script that did all rotations per fivelet. That gave me 25 new fivelets per one of your original fivelet (one by rotation). I wrote 25 per line, and then manually tried to pic one of the 25 fivelets on each line that made sense in english followed by other on the next line.

script
Code: [Select]
awk 'BEGIN {
i=0
a[i++] = "ykouh"; a[i++] = "lozdu"; a[i++] = "lujbb"; a[i++] = "scbkd";
a[i++] = "eboyl"; a[i++] = "izexz"; a[i++] = "hvwby"; a[i++] = "hvssh";
a[i++] = "ijdtq"; a[i++] = "olcbp"; a[i++] = "okneo"; a[i++] = "dssqj";
a[i++] = "frmxx"; a[i++] = "weqvo"; a[i++] = "efgbu"; a[i++] = "hwdix";
a[i++] = "frhav"; a[i++] = "nwsxg"; a[i++] = "eqquz"; a[i++] = "pyanc";
a[i++] = "ydlnw"; a[i++] = "sziba"; a[i++] = "hszoz"; a[i++] = "sgbhm";
a[i++] = "sgwoa"; a[i++] = "nareq";

T="abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"

n=i
for (i=0; i<n; i++) {
        s=a[i]
        for (D=1; D<=26; D++) {
                for (j=1; j<=length(s); j++) {
                        c = substr(s, j, 1)
                        p = index(T, c) + D
                        if (p > 26) p = p - 26
                        d = substr(T, p, 1)
                        #print p
                        printf "%c", d
                }
                printf " "
        }
        printf "\n"
} }'

output produced (bolds are my manual findings)
Code: [Select]

I could not figure any logic on the number of rotations used per each "fivelet".

Exactly, that's it. That was by though also, so I made a brute force approach doing all possible rot(x) per fivelet. I couldn't find the logic on the different 'x' sequence, though.

:tu: I wanted to solve this by coding a bit in php but didn't actually have the time :)

So I just used this Caesarian Shift solver ;) http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/caesar.php

By the way, it would have been waaaaay harder to solve if Yud had used a different alphabet instead of abcdef... ;)

true, it is a take on the caesar shift but the method of shifting was an idea that just came to me, so other then useing the basic idea of the caesar shift, any similarity between my code and any other code is coincidence

you did not find the logic to the shifts ??? once you had the 1st fivelet why didn't you play around with it to find the logic?

I did try a number of ideas that came my mind, but couldn't find any pattern. I'll try again later at night.

well I'll give you "fallowing"  efgbu hwdix frhav (should be fshav sorry was doing it by hand)
