I modded my maglite.
on: October 13, 2010, 12:26:25 AM
I bought a nie ize led upgrade combo II with regular tail cap switch non IQ.   installed it on my AA mini maglite and I absolutely love it, I never have really had a chance to handle a "high", (30), lumen flashlight before.
EDIT Also gave it a good cleaning of the lens while it was apart.  Much better now. The lens has never been cleaned, I have owned the light for about 10-11 months.

Make a tool idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot. Also, Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

You really need to play with a "high" lumen flashlight.  :D  Many will blow that Maglite away.

Having said that, for sheer reliability you can't go wrong with a LED Mag  :salute:

$10 would have gotten you a more powerful standalone flashlite than the upgraded maglite...

Not all about power though.  Maglites are nice lights in their own right.

Agent,  it's fun to mod things sometimes huh?  Glad your happy with it and it's pumping out the Lumen.  :tu:
It's funny how little lumen it takes to light things up.  I have an E1E rated at 15 Lumen and it's a total surprise
when you click the lil' gaffer on.  :)

The 2 AA mag is well worth upgrading for a few bucks - really well made kit and a focusable beam  :tu:

I did just that to mine as it was probably the first decent light I bought :)

Mags are bullet proof in their own right.  I have about 10, and I beat the hell out of them!

I still have a AA Maglite in my toolbox that I got about 12 years ago. Maybe I'll give it an upgrade. I have brighter lights but like Mercury said they're bullet proof. I consider them an icon.

Too bad no one seems to have a tail cap switch that works with the newer MAG-LEDs, the multi-mode ones.  That would be a pretty good light for the average joe.
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

I have two upgrades right now for my 2AA Maglites

One is a TerraLux MiniStar2 Extreme. The other is a Nite Ize LED upgrade with tail cap switch.

The Nite Ize has 3 LEDs and this gives a nice wide beam...but it isn't terribly strong. A nice light to light up a room in the dark though. I love the tail cap switch.

The TerraLux is a bright little upgrade. I would say 2 to 3x as strong as the Nite Ize (subjective). It is brighter then my 3 AA cell LED Maglite.

What I did, I combined the TerraLux head with the Nite Ize tail switch. Now I have a real good Maglite that I am super happy with.

Mine is the TerraLux TLE-5EX as seen here: http://www.thetorchsite.co.uk/TerraLUX_TLE-5EX.html
I can't remember where I got mine or if it was less than this but I think there might be a discount code around for this site

Nice usable mod mate. And it's good to see you recycling the torch rather than just replacing it :tu:
