New Evo
on: September 26, 2007, 11:19:08 PM
My wife bought me an Evo S-17 for an anniversary gift.  It is a really cool tool and it has a blade that locks too.  I am putting the Wenger on duty.  Does anyone out there have one of these, if so, how do you like it?  I like the locking mechanism, definately cool. :)  It is somewhat smaller than the Vic SAKs but that is not necessarily a bad thing.  I'll keep posting on how well it works for me.

I will have to say that I have yet to do a long days cutting with the new evo, but the handles are comfortable.  It is the perfect scale design (ergonomicly) for a small knife like the SAK.

I had an EVO S 10 for a while, equivalent to the Vic Spartan. The locking blade is GREAT. I eventually gave it to my brother-in-law. The lock-tab kept was hard on the pocket linings and it was a tad thicker then I was used to for EDC.

I ain't got no Evos yet.  :(   (Am looking forward to the arrival of the SOSAK knife.)

What about those rubber inlays on the handle? Does it seem like they might peel away eventually?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Nope- the rubber inlays are pretty tough.  After several months of fairly hard use, mine doesn't even show a scratch or nick yet.

Just for the record, EVO (short for Evolution) scales are all plastic- the EVOGrip scales have the rubber inserts.

Do you think that the scales will hold up?

Yeah, I guess that you could say that.  By the way, does anyone know when exactly that the swiss army knife got its plastic red scales?

The red plastic is actually cellidor, and was descended from the original wood scales.  Eventually they were changed from wood to some fibrous material that was popular at the time, then eventually changed to cellidor, which has been altered slightly over the years since it was introduced in the 50's.

Or somewhere there abouts...

From the Intarweb:

Cellidor - CAB (Cellulose Acetate Butyrate) plastic -

Quote
Cellulose Acetate Butyrate or CAB. Unlike other common synthetic plastics, the cellulosic plastics are not manufactured by polymerizing a monomer. Instead, they are produced by the chemical modification of cellulose, a natural polymer. Cellulose itself is not a thermoplastic, since it will not melt. Yet , by the viscose process, it is made into film (cellophane) and into fiber (rayon) that compete with the products of its thermoplastic derivatives.

Butyrate, cellulose acetate butyrate, tubing is ideal in any length for storage, packaging and shipping. Tubes are transparent and rigid with excellent dimensional stability and rigid with excellent dimensional stability and high impact strength. They are strong, durable and easy to fabricate. Butyrate tubing can be cut and sawed with standard equipment.

Cellulosics, as a group, are characterized by good strength, toughness, and high surface gloss. In addition, they have good chemical resistance, good clarity, sparkle, and will take decoration readily. Cellulose acetate butyrate is tougher than acetate and has lower moisture absorption. It resists weathering and has excellent transparency. Although it is adversely affected by alcohol, alkalis, paint removers, and acetones, it is resistant to most household chemicals. Additionally, CAB is resistant to the harmful effects of ultra-violet radiation.

It is used for high gloss vacuum formed faces in back lighted signs, especially small point of purchase signs. Designers of display units especially like CAB sheet for its deep-draw properties, ease of formability, and impact resistance.....

There's actually many more than that- they just aren't all published.  The other ones are mostly specials that we ran, one time things and so on...

Keeps me pretty busy, that's for sure!  ;D

Some sod wrote not only an article about the Farmer, but wrote an article about a Farmer in the rain which I and my very wet dog and my wet camera will have to thank him profusely for! :P

Seriously, good article and I am certain everyone will agree in a few days!
