If you don't want to go compound, what about a Mongol- or horse-bow? Smooth, fast and they feel like a compound in the draw (a bit) with the weight dropping off as you draw it. Quicks have a few different ones; http://www.quicks.com/pdf/pdf12to27.pdf (second page down). They take a bit of getting used to after a 'normal' recurve or compound, but it's worth trying. Nice and short for field as well.Don't suppose you're left-handed by any chance, are you?
There's a club not far from you, I've just been told; http://www.bridgewoods.archer.btinternet.co.uk/broadband.html
When I started out compound bow shooting, me and my gf got a Genesis training bow. The reason being is you can adjust the draw length so we each could shoot correctly. Also it has adjustable pulls from 15-25 lbs which is great for first timers or people who don't want a large pull. Then after we graduated to stronger bows we set it up for Bow-Fishing! (which I haven't done yet but will).(Image removed from quote.)
see, mates to the rescue!then get a hat like this;(Image removed from quote.)
Here's one Mikey and the price is in pounds!http://www.bowsports.com/acatalog/Bowsports_Catalogue_Bows_30.htmlYou want the Mathews Genesis Pro. I want the Switchback XT! I have the LX (discontinued) and FX-2 (for her)and you'll need a site, rest, arrows, tips, most use a mechanical draw (sissy's!) if you get in it, we'll help you out my friend
If you get a compound don't buy any accessories until we've had a little chat, and I've had a sort through Ian's Big Box O'Fun

lol poor guy (move to America and shuck them ex's!) ! I've heard that about hunting there, I'm not a true hunter myself but like to shoot and always wanted the skill. you probably could get good deals on recurves and long bows if your interested.
I've always wanted to learn that! I've saved info on it, that would be a great skill to learn!

I've saved info on it, that would be a great skill to learn!Well survival bows are dead easy to make in less than a couple of hours, arrows are a real bugger though You do have to watch and listen to the bow though, as there only good for perhaps 30-40 shots before they crack or really let go big time

Having said that, I've seen a 70# compound let go at full draw and that's truly frightening If you want to make arrows, read Arrowsmithing: A Workable Knowledge from Primitive to Traditional by R. E. Brotzman, and The Archer's Craft by A. E. Hodgkin. They'll soon sort you out
A bookshop you say? You could soon become my very favourite person!
ouch! I have a 70lb bow and think about that sometimes! (composite arrows breaking)
young 30's is a good age to find your dream job! Find it! if other people can do it, why can't you!
we'll leave the light on for you micky for the day you jump on a ship and make it!
