Soldier 1891
on: September 29, 2007, 11:23:12 PM
  Helo guys !

I would like to know if the handle of the SOLDIER knife ( 1891 ) Elsener was
made of BLACK WALNUT ? I went to work other they at some place and they
had flors made of Walnut but it was dark (  dark brown )
Maybe the handle on soldier is black because of some dark stain ??? can someone
confirm if  that was a natural color or finished ?  ???

Well I don't know for sure but looks like the wood on  Soldier 1891 model
DID NOT have any finish on it ( stain ) but I can't be 100 % sure.
Maybe after 100 + years the wood change due oxydation....

But "Roger" +B couldn't find out more about it....I'll let you guys know
as soon I get some News.

  Ok here some NEWS

Not from Mr. Elsener but GOOD NEWS for all of us....

From ROGER  +B

hello,

i see you have posted in multitool about the old wartime sak and theyr scales:

here the ansver, its first eichenholz that was soaked in rapsöl and in the rapsöl was some kind of darkmaker, quite likley russ, like from an forging fire...you haveto translate the german names. then they switched to ebony, that wood was back then avaliable here (now banned) and allready black. you see the differences of those blackned woods easy, the ebony has shorther grain than the eiche...the lines in the wood...

with the help of an verry old swiss i will whrite an sak book on that matter early next year and that book will go verry deep in details, with pics and explaining. also any yearstamp, vic an wenger will be shown, lots of pictures etc. the book will be in english.

that infos are ok to post.

also watch my forum, has you sign in for the newsletter? the yeoman, 91mm lumberjack plus etc are avaliable now, colored alox classics soon.

have an good sunday

+B
