Favorite SAK for Specific Tasks
on: November 25, 2010, 05:35:42 AM
I'm sure some variation of this has been done many times before, but what the heck.  New threads are what make forums go round, right?  :D

So what is your favorite SAK for any particular task?  I'll list mine:

1) General EDC/pocket carry: Cadet.  Love the small size and I use the file a lot.

2) Outdoors/bushcrafty type stuff:  PE OHT.  Easy to use with good grippy handles.  It is actually the only SAK that isn't alox that I consistently come back to.

3) Heavy duty/multifunction use:  Spirit Plus Ratchet.  I only got this recently, but it has already replaced the Wave and has earned its keep around the house and at work.

4) SAK nostalgia:  Alox Soldier.  It doesn't really fit into any usage category for me, but I just love the thing.  The package is compact, slim and super tough.  Plus it is a true classic in knife design.

What SAK do you reach for for your various tasks?

I always have a SAK on me.  For awhile now, my Cadet has been playing back up in my Jumbo, so that is basically an edc item.  I really like it for the file.

For outdoorsy stuff, I really like the OHT PE.  I need to get another one, mine got absconded with by a friend.  He gave me a crappy light for it, which I promptly lost.

I always, always have an alox classic on my keys, that is my beard trimmer.

I used to carry a Soldier for EDC, but I just traded it to Dunc for a LM bit driver.

I like to carry a large SAK on my belt along with my MT, used to be a Swisschamp, now it's going to be a Champion when that one arrives.

Let's see...

1) General EDC/pocket carry: Compact. Small size, and has everything I need during the day. May be replaced by a Timekeeper, but then there is nothing more to add

2) Outdoors/bushcrafty type stuff:  Trailmaster (Trekker). Not the OH-type, because I want it legal to carry all the time here.

3) Heavy duty/multifunction use:  Cybertool 34

4) SAK nostalgia:  any Alox model I have. Just love them  I almost always have an alox model with me in addition to the other SAK I carry.

Cadet for a slim, lightweight EDC knife. Great for cutting the plastic packaging from around soda pop bottles and cans.

Spirit for an EDC multitool.

The Maxpedition Jumbo is a favorite EDC bag for many.  Look it up, you may end up getting one!

EDC: most likely to be a small two layer, Vic Sportsman or Wenger Commander for example.  This would be to compliment a pliers based tool.

Great outdoors:  If I've got a fixed blade with me it'll be a Huntsman, if it's going to be my only knife then my Forrester.

Weekends: often something a little bigger; Woodsman, Champion or Champ for example, normally I'll not bother with a pliers based multi so I feel the need to carry a few more tools.

Ah, that old.  In that case it likely never had a name, just a catalogue number. There are quite a few folks here that know more about vintage SAKs than me though.

Trekker....which magically becomes a OH trekker in the great outdoors  ;), does it all!!!
Strong, large blade which locks in place. 3 great screwdrivers. A saw that actually works. FANTASTIC!!
Just wish they would add the new grippy, 2 component, scales to a plain edge OHT AND keep the tweezers/toothpick which are surprisingly useful......

Been carrying around the Vic Windsor lately.  Love this little SAK, I find I can carry
the 74mm one's in pocket without too much discomfort and this one being so nice
and flat it's a joy.  :tu:
