My "Here, hold this for a second" pocket
on: August 28, 2023, 06:51:32 PM
I've never, ever used this pocket for anything... until today.

I'm officially calling it my "Here, hold this for a second" Pocket.

Typically, I have always carried a pocket-clip knife that is one-hand-open capable. Since getting more into Swiss Army knives, I'm carrying my climber a lot. This extra Pocket in my jeans has really come in handy today!

SAKs: Vic Climber, Vic Classic SD, Vic Classic (non-SD), Engraved 3-blade SAK (given to me as a gift)

I think you might like that pocket more now that you've found it. I have my car key there buttons facing outside so I can open the locks easily with hands full of shopping bags. All I need is a free fingertip. And next to the car key sits my LM bit envelope. Previously I've carried next to my car key a Led Lenser P3 and a Space pen all in the same row. Just some ideas. Or you can just use it in a way you have done :)

For me, I usually keep a smaller knife (typically one that doesn't have a clip, but I've found a Kershaw Chive or Gerber EAB fit well clipped to that pocket) in my watch pocket. It saves having to dig for it.

Problem is that there is so much variation between jeans companies. Some I can fit something like a PST or Rebar with only a little bit sticking up. Others will only fit a very small knife, like a Classic SD or Small Stockman. Yet others are like yours, and I'm able to put a reasonably sized SAK in there (4 layers or less).

Overalls unfortunately don't (but you do have the chest pocket), and police duty pants are even better (I usually keep my folder in the additional narrow and tall front pockets designed for pistol mags).

Wrangler Jeans have a great sized 5th pocket. I carry one of my traditional in it. Their Carpenter short also have a nice 5th pocket.

I use my 5th pocket for loose change and/or my Nitecore Tube and/or Midnite Manager.

  :tu:

My experience with 5th pocket has been slightly different.  Having had to work on my knees at sites inside equipment and access boxes, access points etc, I found that it was easy for most objects to get pushed up and out of the 5th pocket.
Lost a few Bullet Pens, a nice liner lock splashed into a toilet, and found other items laying on the ground after going erect.

Great for a quick hold pocket, but not for carry unless secured. 👍

PS: the suspension clip is a great utility, 😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Ahh that's annoying to drop or lose stuff that's supposed to stay in the pocket! Don't want to drop my precious gear into a toilet :D

I've had maybe one drop from a pocket. I dropped a folding knife many years ago from my workpants that had a knife/flashlight pocket inside a normal pocket. Not going into details but it was a bad moment to drop it and I went IWB carry for 4-5 years after that :D
