Where is the straight pin on a Scientist?
on: December 01, 2010, 05:19:11 PM
I appear to have one but cannot find the straight pin.  Usually its under the corkscrew.  Also, what is a "fluted" corkscrew?

Thanks!

If it's not near the corkscrew then... it's probably missing ;)

And fluted means it has a groove, like this one:

Do you have a pic of the straight pin?  I thought they were usually right under the corkscrew, inserted into a small hole near the corkscrew pivot point....?  I can't even find a hole there....

It's supposed to be right there, like in the picture here. If your scales have no hole for the pin then... well, I thought all Scientists had a pin, so that's a bit weird

Bummer....probably had the scale replaced at some point.  Wonder how that would effect the value, even if the corkscrew is fluted...?

Thanks for all your help!

According to Victorinox the model Scientist was made between 1986 and 1999. The straight pin was introduced in 1991 and since 1994 the corkscrew did not have the groove anymore. At least that`s what Victorinox says in an answer in their own forum.
But I have 2 different ones here, both NIB right out of shops. None of them has a straight pin, one has a grooved corkscrew, the other one does not have the groove. How can this be ?

Correct, older Scientists do not have the straight pin hole so don't worry. They are still original scales.

I'm sorry I frightened you, I guess I had the years wrong (1986, 1991... my math failed me :) )

Problem solved...
It remembers me about one situation when I bought older XLTimekeeper.
I was looking for pin too. There was written in papers that it should have pin, but there was no hole under the corkscrew for the pin. So???

Finaly - after I closely read the description of the knife, I found that by older knives with no pin-hole, the pin was just under the hook.  :)

Just loose under the hook?

I know I'm a dunce, but I just cannot figure out the postage on EDC.  How can I list a postage price when I don't know where the prospective buyer resides?  I must be missing something....

I always invoice after purchase.  But most of your buyers are in the US which will make life simpler.

For me there are normally three prices I need to consider, domestic, Europe and rest of the world.  I've found it easiest to state prices in the main listing and then send a Paypal payment request after the auction.  This also allows me to offer combined at cost shipping over multiple auctions.

If you need a hand/have any questions just shoot me a PM :tu:

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

The software allows you to set up regions and sizes which means that it takes a bit to set up, but once you set it up, it will automatically calculate size/region costs for any buyer.  Or you can do it Neil's way for more casual selling.

Yes, just loose under the hook.
Of course this previous solution had two disadvantages:
- when using hook, the pin can get lost
- when closing the hook the tip of the pin can be damaged by the hook. (and this pin was damaged.)

I'll be darned. Learn something new every time I log on.

I like the dedicated slot for the pin better. Imagine that. ;)
