My Sideclip is dead. Long live the Sideclip!
on: December 08, 2010, 01:41:36 AM
When you carry a discontinued tool you have to be prepared for the possibility that it could break but it was still pretty hard to take.

 :(

It was abuse on my end that did it for sure.

I was using my trusty friend as a pry bar and one of the handles snapped right off... To be fair to the tool I bounced my 290 pounds on it before it gave way.

Now. I do have a spare but the pocket clip on that one is bent and I haven't the tool to take it apart and bend the clip back. Tonight I'll find a way.

Now what to do with this one. Keep for parts?

I have an old wave that I snapped one of the pliers off also. Maybe I should send that one back in but this one was my fault...

First, post pictures. :D Seriously, I would keep it for parts. You could send LM an email telling them what happened, and odds are they'll take care of you even though it was abuse. But they'll just give you a Kick. Really, a $20 Kick is probably worth less than the Sideclip parts.

I'll get some pics up tomorrow. The parts are out in the van and with the windchill it feels like 1 degree outside. I think I'll camp out in here until morning light.

I think you are right. I'll take it apart and keep the parts on hand.

And now the hunt begins for another one.

I have to have a backup you know.  :ahhh

Sorry about your companion.  I am trying to figure out how to get a backup pulse for such occasions.  I keep getting close to getting one and another bill pops up.  I would panic if I broke my pulse, though, so I had better get on it!

Sorry to hear about your loss  :-\

I carried my KF4 Juice daily until I added more Juice's [Jeese] to my collection now I am a little nervous about pushing the KF4 in case it were to break :-\  I've had it from new :D

It is a great EDC Multitool and the ultimate plan is to get another for day to day work :D

As Ari said I would email Leatherman to see what they could do. Sadly chances are that if they replace it will be a Kick, a shame if you have a discontinued tool  :-\

Ideally you want to take the pocket clip off the broken tool and replace the bent one on your back up tool . Your welcome to send both tools to me as I have the right security bits for them and I'll sort it out for you . Or you could buy the bits yourself off ebay cheaper then the postage to me and back . As I told Mercury the other day I'll talk you through the disassembly and assembly but its isnt difficult .

Plus, you can buy an "aftermarket" clip for your Kick.  Attach according to instructions.  Problem solved! :2tu:

The tools are cheap and if you follow Dunc's instructions it is really rather simple to take the tool apart.  Or you could just send them to him and ask him to put all the best parts into one tool!

Thanks for all the replies.

Here are a few pics. I think I will take my two sideclips apart and make one nice one keeping the parts as spares.

Ouch and double ouch  :(

Good luck on your recombination resurrection project.   And a  :salute: for not abusing the LM warranty and just sending it in, many would have.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Ok...I got the tools in hand to take this thing apart and tonight I will start project "Franken-clip"

Now I've tried to take one of these apart and I can't get one screw to budge.

Anybody got some tips? ???

Thanks my man.  Heat worked although I did have to be a little more...aggressive you might say with the heat.

Once it was hot they just unscrewed like nothing.

Of course that tool has been together since '98 and so that was 12 years of holding tight I was fighting through.

I got two completely disassembled sideclips and I am ready to put together one good one.  I'll snap some pics...

Yeh the trick is in the heating . Make sure you clean off all the old loctite ( I use a pin ) so the screw turns nice and easily in the thread . then apply a little new loctice . Not too much or it oozes out under the handles and when it drys you will have trouble opening the tool .Don't ask me how I knowe that

Well that was fun.  :ahhh

No actually I like working on things like this.

A vice, the special tools and a propane torch and they were apart.

This is the one that had the bent clip.
