How old is my climber?
on: June 16, 2016, 03:52:10 PM
Hi, first post here, very interesting forum. So, the SAK I have had the longest is a climber. As far as I can remember, I got it before I went to Philmont, in 1976. It has a screw in the scissors, but a hole in the awl, and a half stop on the cap lifter. It has no package hook, of course. I thought I found a date for addition of  the hole in the reamer, but now I can't find it in the Wiki. And I learned all 91mm models have the half stop in the cap lifter, so no help there. The scissors have a "V" shaped leaf spring, so that makes them post '75. The end of the spring is bent in a curve, which lays against a flat part on the handle, as opposed to the latest model which has a groove cut into the moveable part of the handle. Since that happened in 1990, that puts their age between '75 and '90, I guess? No way to narrow it down further it seems.

 I guess if you bought it before '76 and it has the scissor spring that dates it post '75 wouldn't it mean it's from around '75/'76?

I thought I read that somewhere. So, I can't have bought it prior to '85, this must not be the one I took to scout camp.....I guess I might have replaced it, but I don't remember that.

Welcome aboard Desdenova!  Sounds like the SAK you took to Philmont in '76 is somewhere else now...

The Climber you describe (you know, pictures are quite helpful!) sounds like an '85/'86 version, based on the hole in the reamer and the half-stop on the opener.

Enjoy the forums...this is a great place to learn and laugh!

+1 and good to see you around Z Man!  :)

Assuming this Climber has the 4 line VSSR tang, the 'small V' version was stamped until around '86, so if it's a 'large V' (bigger than the other lettering), then it's most likely '87 or later. That might narrow it down a bit.  :tu:

Yep small v, so this knife didn't go to camp in '76. Guess my chronology is a bit off. I'll have to search my memory banks and see if I can remember where and when I got it.
Here's a pic. I replaced the scales, the originals were damaged by solvent. Some reflection in the pic, makes the scales look weird, they are smooth.
