Bottle Openers
on: October 13, 2007, 08:01:51 PM
Bit of light speculation here:

Does anyone here, beside yours truly, find the bottle openers which seem to be a standard feature on almost every multitool to be useless? I haven't taken a drink from a bottle which uses a pop-off cap in years. I wish they'd use that space for something like a chisel, miniature Phillips or cheese grater. Just wondering.

Bill.

I agree for the most part. It helps when it's a combo vesions so that at least it has a second function. LM's also put a kinda-usefull wire stripper, and the sharp tip works for a make-shift awl on the tools that don't have them. (Luke's broken record says: KF4's don't have one...) The crazy thing is that now-days most bottles have twisty caps and a lot of cans have pull tabs, so it kinda makes the tools not very useful except for in the ocasional pinch.

Now the other side of the story... I got married in Jan. 2005 and I hadn't started carrying a MT yet. In our wedding cerimony my wife and I had comunion after the vows. Unfortunately the person who was supposed to open the wine (or juice, I forget) hadn't. I gave it a good twist hoping it was a twisty: it wasn't and it didn't open and I ripped my hand up a bit ::) Needless to say, we just ate the bread... Now I would at least have my P4 on me which would have fixed that problem in a second. Anyhow, I learned my lesson and I don't complain to loudly about having a bottle opener even when I don't expect to need it :D

Neat story. One website, the name of which I can't recall, had stories of Leatherman tools saving the day. One was a mother saving a trapped child, another a Green Beret medic using a Wave to perform field surgery. Yours could've have been titled "How a Leatherman could have saved my Communion!"

I was trying to figure out how I could modify my bottle openers into something useful. I though perhaps cutting the lower lip off and using the opener as a quasi-box knife or hookbill blade of some sort.

Thanks for the reply, Bill.

Yeah, it could have been a good "my LM saved my wedding" story, but...
Anyhow, I don't know if you do any electric work or not, but for home wiring the combo tool on the LM's is almost a perfect tool. If you could sharpen the tip and cutting edge just a little bit, you could use it rip and slice the outer sheathing off of the wires. As it is it works on some wire, but not all. Then it has the wire stripper which works OK after you have some practice. The shape of the hook can also put a nice loop in the wire for hooking up to the device. So with one tool you've gone from sheathed wire to being ready to device.

As a beer drinker  I use the caplifter quite a bit . Most of the bottled beer in the UK still needs a bottle opener .

Go to www.sosakonline.com, go into the gallery (link at the top) and search for beer or bottle and you'll see that it's not wasted on me!

Like many other tools, it's a lifesaving one when you need it.  I am reminded of an old Married With Children episode in which Al and Jefferson, hot and tired, each buy bottles of Coke from the locals in the small town they are visiting.  $.05/bottle.  They spend the next few minutes making fun of the rubes until they realize they have no way of opening the bottle, look at the "rube" who is offering to "rent" hit bottle opener for $5.  Al pays the man, gets his bottle open, and Jefferson looks smug as he pulls out a Swiss Army Knife and pops his own open for free.

It may have been a comedy, but if you should ever find yourself off the beaten path, and have the chance to try something different (or the same- Coca Cola is still available in the old glass bottles)  it could make or ruin your day.

Usually when I get a new multitool, I sharpen the can/bottle opener immediately. It makes for a great second blade (or in my case with the Surge, a third blade)! I use my multi to cut open packages alot, and hate getting that tape gunk/residue all over my main blade. But for some reason, I don't mind it on my opener. Plus, it still works great on cans and bottles.

Thanks for the tutorial.. I don't have a picture, but it looks exactly like the regular opener, just sharp on the opening/cutting edge.
