Gerber GDC Zip Lineup.
on: January 07, 2014, 01:42:12 AM
I thought it was time to get these zipper pull mini tools.

GDC Zip Blade, GDC Zip Driver, GDC Zip Hex, and GDC Zip Light.

My first impressions of the lineup. They appear to be well made with thick enough steel that resist bending. The Driver and Hex have sharp protrusions that may cause damage to clothing over time. I can see that happening. The Light and Blade are fairly well enclosed. My personal favorite is the Light with bottle opener. Most times, a light is just the thing to get into doors at night.

I don't think I'd use the drivers or stubby knife much but I agree the light is nice

I think actually, for a non-"knife-person", that knife could be quite useful, opening boxes and stuff :)

I do like the look of the drivers, seems like a good compliment to a SAK or something like that. Not sure if I'd actually hang it on a zipper pull though

The nice thing about the blade...nobody would ever know it was there...if that is a concern for someone wanting to wearing one.

Problem is it's a locking blade. I can justify carrying a locking blade a lot of the time, I don't think I could ever explain to an interested policeman why I had that and it needed to lock.

Got the Zip Blade two days ago.
First of, the loop broke within the first hour, doesn't matter wanted to exchange it anyway. Well the green disk and the screw are not concentric, the washers are fatter than the michelin man. I think the whole tool could be improved easily.
Despite that, I like it, its a rather handy tool.

I think I'd be a little more worried about it counting as a 'disguised' knife which is one of the specifically banned knives.  Same list as flick knives, gravity knives etc etc.

The Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order 2002

"a disguised knife, that is any knife which has a concealed blade or concealed sharp point and is designed to appear to be an everyday object of a kind commonly carried on the person or in a handbag, briefcase, or other hand luggage (such as a comb, brush, writing instrument, cigarette lighter, key, lipstick or telephone).”.

Ah, yes, that too.

I wasn't aware of that bit of legislation but then I don't go around carrying such things!

Thanks Gareth

I'm sorry to revive an old thread, but it seems more fitting, than starting a new thread on this.

Has any of you had any experience with the GDC Zip Hex? I'm a bit a worried that they're too small to get any real leverage, especially considering the fact that Gerber advertises these to be used on bicycles. As far as I can see, the driver is protruding straight from the handle, and not on an angle?

Well...yes and no. They are sturdy enough. I have tried them a few times and didn't find them all that bad. Not exactly the most ergonomic, but will do the job. Yes, you can use them either straight out, or at an angle...just not 90 degrees.

Should you buy one...that is up to you. There are probably better solutions...but non so compact. Its give and take.

Well, I actually ordered something entirely different instead. Got a "real" bike tool from Topeak, which should arrive tomorrow.

Thread Necro is successful!

I happened to have my Zip Hex handy. I needed something long enough to loosen the set screw (well, hex bolt, I suppose) to remove the mounting bracket from my U lock.

Look at it doing its job!

I replaced the bracket with tubing from an older, brokenlier lock. The Zip Hex didn't need to do this part, obviously.

The Zip series was a nifty enough idea, and the Zip Hex really stood out for me. It's too bad Gerber discontinued it, though it's hard to blame them if sales weren't high enough to warrant continued production.
