Victorinox Tomo knife
on: January 19, 2011, 06:29:11 AM
While at the Victorinox booth today I managed to get a look at the new Tomo designed knife.

I'm still not quite certain what to think of it myself- it's a Classic, but in a very strange body, something Victorinox doesn't usually do.  It's interesting from a "something different" point of view, but it doesn't strike me as overly "Victorinoxy" which was a word I made up on the spot while looking at it.

One neat thing about it is that it comes in this formed cardboard type box, similar to an egg crate.  These are environmentally friendly boxes, and are actually pretty neat.

Victorinox was nice enough to give me the Tomo in these pictures, and I'll be sure to test it out for a while and see if I can wrap my head around it.  Victorinox claims that it has become very popular with female audiences, so maybe I would have appreciated it more when I still had long hair!

Looks like someone glued the tools from a Classic in to a cheap piece of plastic.

What is there to say when the packaging is perhaps more interesting than the knife?

If you removed the Vic logo and I hadn't seen it here, I'd suppose it was a Chinese made give away from a real estate trade show.

While true, it's cute. >.>  For some reason, though, I think it'd pair up well with a Tamagotchi pet.  :kickout:

Oh, Grant, did you happen to hear a price point on these?

No, I either didn't get or don't recall the price on these.

I'd be more interested if it weren't a Classic.  Not even an SD...and no T&T?

I'd be halfway interested in, say, a Rambler or Manager in this shell.

And sure it looks Victorinoxy...it looks like someone cut a SwissCard in half :P
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

Note at that "thing"'s paper: it says "designed by abitax tokyo". That's why it doesn't look like a Victorinox, it just happens to be using the same tools :-\
Are the traditional makers turning to 3rd party (ugly?) designs this year?

That's a weird one. Yeah maybe a more feminine design... I guess.
...I thought women like pretty things though, this I don't think qualifies.  ;)

It vaguely resembles a credit card. That should do it... ::) :D

Straight up, I don't like it.

However... the box is very sensible, it gets the job done and can be dropped straight in the recycling or even the compost bin :tu:

Also it looks nothing like a penknife.  Amongst certain sectors of the western world, knives even the humble SAK have a pretty negative image.  And it is an image thing, their usefulness hasn't decreased and at least in the UK the laws haven't changed but people's perceptions have.

This little rehash of the Classic looks nothing like a knife and more like a USB drive ;)   In fact I'm surprised it doesn't have one fitted.

I'd love to pull one apart :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I don't care for it.  It looks ugly and bulky.  Plus no tweezers and toothpick.  I give them points for trying though!
Who knows...

Paging nuphoria, paging nuphoria, please pick up the white courtesy phone.

Also, showed it to my wife (who's also a graphic designer) and she hates it with a passion.

This adds new life to the Classic functions for me again, the environment is a part that the factory has had in their policy for many years now, this is for me in that trend. Very special package also.
This looks to be wonderful....

I can see them using these as advertising knife premiums. Depending on the scale material and process for imprinting it sounds like they might have a winner. :tu:

You know most companies will want their name on something that makes them seem "Green" or environmentally friendly. :pok:
