Lanyard break-aways
on: January 28, 2011, 09:41:22 PM
Does anyone know where I can get decent-quality break-away hardware for a lanyard?  I'm trying to avoid the typical plastic barrel or clip type.  Are there any available with a strong magnet?

Don't think any magnet small enough for lanyard is strong enough, I have a few rare earth magnet on my lamp right now and I wouldn't trust them as the breaking point on any lanyard.

I use shrink wrap to hold the two ends together , or else melt the ends of the paracord together . Why bother with a breakaway ? Auto erotic strangulation is supposed to be fun .

LOL!

Actually, I'm not wanting to use it in the traditional sense of a safety mechanism.  I basically want a way to carry a tactical light hanging into my pocket rather than using a pocket clip.  The lanyard would attach to my belt, and when I needed to deploy the light, just grab it, give it a downward jerk and it comes loose in my hand.  I don't want to have to release a clip of some type then have to feel my way around the bottom of the pocket for the light.

So, I'm looking for something that I can "break" many times without wear--therefore the magnet idea.  A friend of mine on CPF carries his HDS this way for use with CCW, and he said he uses the barrel type breakaway.  I would think the barrel would wear the more it is "broken" and reconnected.

Any other ideas to accomplish this?  I'm all ears.

You mean the plastic barrel type, right?  Thanks, but I can get those from many different sources.  That's not exactly what I'm looking for.

I never found any that used magnets when I hunted through break away systems.  Other than the barrel type, most cat's collars have break away buckles that are very reliable.  Also key chain style garage door remotes usually come with a heavy duty break away.
