Camper, huntsman, or Fieldmaster?
on: February 05, 2011, 06:27:14 PM
Why do you suppose is the Camper and Huntsman more popular than the Fieldmaster?  I had a Camper or two and own a Huntsman now, but am thinking about a Fieldmaster because of the philips vs. the corkscrew.

It's a good question.  Here in the UK if you walk into a shop to buy a SAK it's almost guaranteed to have a corkscrew.  The Phillips seems to be far more popular in the US.  I believe the reason the corkscrew is more popular in general is simply the fact it's so much a part of the public perception of what a SAK should be.  If I'm honest I find that both are actually of limited use in my life; wine uses corks less and less, the Phillips is limited in the areas it can access.

I'll add that the vast majority of my SAKs have corkscrews, simply because that's what I feel a SAK should look like.  That and the fact I never want to be beaten by a bottle of wine. ;)

I'm debating on whether to get a Fieldmaster or another Camper.  I like the former but think the latter might be a better match w/my PSTII.

and THAT makes it almost as useless as the corkscrew. Or at the very least more frustrating than the corkscrew.

but for us who wear glasses, the corkscrew is more useful:

You could split the difference and go for a Hiker. :)

Fieldmaster or Camper? Looks like you want a saw to compliment your PSTII (You already have a phillips driver and scissors on the PSTII).

In that case, I'd go for a Camper or a Farmer.

I'm leaning more toward a Camper in Stay Glow.  I go to Central America a couple times a year and always take a SAK in my checked luggage.  lat year it was a Huntsman and a Leatherman P4.  I'm thinking the PSTII and a Camper might be better allround

here in utah the camper and huntsman are the most popular models in stores. Subsequently since that is available that is what I have.

The phillips drivers on SAK''s are very limited unless they are the in line type like on the Explorer. Since you will be pairing it up with a PSTII I would go for the Camper. Remember that the can opener on SAK's works well as a phillips driver. Also the Huntsman Lite gives you both the in line phillips and corkscrew as well as a saw.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a Camper in StayGlow.

This SAK and MT stuff IS a sickness, isn't it?  :)

corkscrew w/mini screwdriver > backspring phillips (IMO)

How 'bout a Ranger?  I think it's another overlooked model.

Yes, it is. And I'm sorry to say that there is no know cure.

Good choice on the Camper,  seems an excellent companion to the PST II or Pulse. :tu:

Oh crap-I just thought of something.

About 1/2 the time I tote a MT, it's my modded Paratool with a saw installed.

Next I'll be getting a Climber to go with that:D

The only thing I use the mini-driver for is the towel holder set screws in my bathroom.  As such, I think they're kind of worthless :P

That being said, I lust for the camo version of the Hunstman, as it has the backspring Phillips instead of the corkscrew.  Why the camo version is different, I have no idea.

The can opener does make a decent Phillips, but the number of Phillips screws I've found recessed a half inch or so over the years made me appreciate just that extra touch of reach from the backspringer.
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

I'm not a fan of the backspring phillips , it looks like a "T"handle , but will only handle very moderate torque . TheCorkscrew will get ya outta lots of socially embarassing situations , plus it holds the sublime little mini driver .

Many years ago I used to pack a Feildmaster , basically while travelling in areas that were not weapons friendly , the addition of a nylon cord and a cordlock makes a very nasty field expedient fist load ( back in the far off days when you could carry modest sized pocketknives on planes )

I agree with Nutsak.

I think the Vic Ranger is a much under-appreciated  knife. One of my favorites!

Of course the solution to model selection worries is to get one of each!
