So what's your favorite outdoor tool (by brand) ?
on: October 27, 2007, 03:20:51 AM
Just wondering on everyone's opinions. What's you're criterea for a good outdoor tool? For me the important things are a decent knife, saw, awl, and can opener. My opinion on size varies a lot though, sometimes I want something small, and sometimes I want the kitchen sink ::)

Maybe too much for one thread, but I'd also like to hear your thoughts on different manufacture's best model for outdoors?
LM
Vic
Wenger
SOG
Gerber

Thoughts? :)

Guess it depends on the circumstances. This weekend for instance, I plan on spending every bit of daylight hours outdoors in the woods. I'll be carrying a Leatherman Vista tool the whole time. Big pruners, big saw, little knife blade. That's all I'll need.

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

For me the perfect wood's knife is the humble Victorinox Farmer :)

Not only is it totally legal edc here in the UK but it's small enough and light enough to have on you all the time, so it's there when you need it :), infact someone wrote a review on this months sosakonline for just that reason ;)

Also if I'm away from prying eyes I'll carry my Falkniven F1 and not it's getting cold and wet my Gerber mini hatchet :)

But By brand I'd say...

Fixed blades Cold Steel or Falkniven

Folders Vic Farmer, Mauser/safari hunter, or any of the 91mm or 111mm with a saw :)

Wenger, evo 18 or the toolchest will serve you well :) and you've got to imagine the 120mm with the saws would be awesome too :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Yeah, I don't have a Farmer, but it seems to be just about perfect for the great outdoors. :)

Mine would be my powerlock as the saw is super sharp (although very short) and with it's locking mech makes it very solid.

If it has to be a multitool, I've often thought that if my life totally depended on it in a survival situation, I'd probably go with the LM Supertool (though it's not my favorite tool). It's needlenose pliers are strong and are sharp enough to use in a quasi-surgical situation if needed (the pliers are the one area I don't care for on my Swisstool). It's big, strong, has a reasonably large saw and is simply made. If it weren't for the exposed gears, I'd choose the Powerlock equal to or next in line. I like my Swisstool, but it's relative complexity puts it in third place for me. I don't have a Surge yet, so I can't compare. Just my two bits, Bill.

It sure would be a lot easier for me to rationalize that way ;) A bit OT (but it's my topic anyway!) but the Farmer and Bantam Alox are the two Vics that I'm sure I'll end up with at some point. To me they both seem about as perfect as can be :) I have to be careful though as I tend to be somewhat obsesive once I'm hooked on something, which is part of the reason I've stuck with mostly buying LM at this point. Not because I don't like the others, but because I do. :D

At least you're not off to milk AND eat the cows :P

True, that would be pretty complicated indeed! Venturing way OT now, but did you ever think of the irony involved in a cheeseburger. It's dead cow topped with milk (cheese) which was made by a cow to feed a cow. I wonder how the cows feel about this :-\ It's too bad I like cheesburgers :D
