Modded New Wave - with black finish and S30V blade.
on: February 14, 2011, 01:18:56 AM
My every day carry was a Leatherman New Wave until I got a Charge TTi.  I missed carrying the Wave so I decided to put together a Wave with all the good parts of the TTi.  I added an S30V blade and I modded a standard serrated blade to have a gut hook.  Just for aesthetics I used the laser from work and some laser marking material to blacken the scales using the process described in this thread http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,24944.0.html  The finish actually ended up being a plus because the surface is slightly gritty, whereas the original stainless was smooth and slick.  The finish is easily as hard as a BO finish if not harder.

I wasn't happy at all with my work on modifying the serrated blade so it's getting replaced soon although the gut hook is very sharp and very functional.

Here are the pics. Let me know what you think and any suggestions you might have.

That is an awesome and extremely practical mod.

I'd definitely go for that mod.  All the good stuff of the Charge in a Wave.

The finish certainly can't be injured at all with your fingernail.  I will be carrying this one so I'll see how the finish holds up on the stainless.  Thanks!

It would likely work on the blade as well, I am currently toying with the idea of making a faux damascus finish on the blade.  The marking material is actually designed to put lettering or logos on metal using a laser, I just took it a step further and made an actual finish out of it.  It's still a work in progress but it's fun.
